Beta Arsenic Werks: Vivace tuning and OEM+ modifications Beta 3.3

Various turbochargers, supporting upgrades, and factory options for the Cherrier Vivace and Tograc

  1. xpogosam
    The Lore:

Arsenic Werks started as an after-hours "Skunk Works" style passion project by a handful of Cherrier Group employees, and eventually broke off from Cherrier Group to form its own dedicated company, while still acting as a consultant to Cherrier on their high performance models. What started as a desire to improve the vanilla Stage 3 turbo for the I5, quickly became a large span of product lines covering the 1.2L I3t (UE112),1.5L I4td (UE034d), 1.6l I4t (UE797), 2.0L I4t (UE999), 2.0L I4td (UE158d), and 2.5L I5t (02Y) [internal names made up by me and inspired by VWAG’s engine naming system]. These product lines fill the gap left in the aftermarket by the vanilla game through tuning software and hardware resulting in increased, realistic, and safe horsepower and torque output. Arsenic Werks also acts as a distributor for European market options to the rest of the world, providing access to alternate aesthetic options, European market bumpers, as well as carbon fibre parts.

    Drive Modes (Jailbreak)

All vanilla drive modes have various improvements like better default launch control RPM per mode

    Urban Mode:
Fully softens adaptive suspension, more significant muffling of exhaust, and disconnects driveshaft from rear diff for greater maneuverability in tight city streets. Variable boost reduction in the tuning menu (allows Urban mode to be a low power city mode),
    screenshot_2022-12-13_16-04-33.png
    Rapidite Mode*:
Based on Arsenic mode but allows you to add between 2 and 5psi (via tuning menu like Urban mode), fully stiffens adaptive suspension, more aggressively locks center diff (same settings used for off road mode), fully disabled traction control, and 6800rpm launch control RPM.

*This mode at +5psi is not meant for the Stage 3+ 02Y package or any of the Stage 1 packages. These packages are already pushing the limit as is and it is not recommended to exceed +2psi in this mode for those packages as it risks over torque damage. It will may not immediately cause issue, but long-term use in this mode with boost higher than +2psi will cause serious internal damage so use at your own discretion.

    Engine Specific Product Lines:

    “02Y” 2.5L I5 Product Line:

    screenshot_2023-02-26_22-38-01.png

    Stage 3+ Turbo & Software

The package that started Arsenic Werks. We were unhappy with the vanilla stage 3 offerings for the 02Y I5, we found the turbo to be very laggy, not building full boost until 3rd gear. Our Stage 3+ turbo rebuilds the vanilla Stage 3 turbo for quicker response and greater efficiency in the top end. The vanilla Stage 3 long block hits its torque limit at 640lbft, and as such we meticulously engineered the package to maximize power and create a flatter torque curve, while staying within the long block’s limits The Stage 3+ package reaches the maximum capabilities of the vanilla FCV platform. The Stage 3+ ECU comes in a High Torque and Low Torque version (change in ecu slot drop down menu). The low torque file retains the power levels of the vanilla Stage 3 package but improves the response significantly. The high torque file gains +51hp and +16lbft over the vanilla stage 3 package (a +342hp and +227lbft increase over stock!). Both tunes feature a redline of 8200, a higher idle, and the vanilla race ECUs afterfire presets.

Stage 3+ (Low Tq): This tune dynos at 699hp and 595lbft

-(within 4hp and 3lbft of vanilla Stage 3)
Stage 3+ (High Tq): This tune dynos at 749hp and 614lbft

Stage 4 Big Turbo, Software, & Long Block

Taking what we learned from the initial launch of the Stage 3+ package, we asked ourselves what we could do next. One of the options we explored was diving further into the 02Ys capabilities and extracting a four digit horsepower number out of it. We started at the weak point, the block. With billet connecting rods the upper torque limit was pushed above 900lbft and with the addition of more aggressive camshafts, the 02Y can rev out to 9000rpm. To accommodate the need for increased air flow, the Stage 4 kit also includes a thick intercooler, carbon fiber intake pipe, aluminum charge pipes, and a much larger pod filter too. The camshafts give it a nice lope at idle too. We obviously needed to go with a larger turbo for our power goals, and while that sacrificed a bit of response, the camshafts help the turbo to still spool faster than the vanilla stage 3 turbo. But once 65psi hits, you’ll forget you waited. Its not lag, its foreplay.

    Stage 4:
This tune dynos at 1050hp and 798lbft
    • also includes selectable filter options of grey and red

    “UE999” 2.0L I4 Product Line:

    screenshot_2023-02-26_22-36-23.png

    Stage 3+ Turbo & Software

With the success of our “02Y” product line, we decided to branch further into the FCV platform, starting with the UE999 2.0L I4. We followed the ethos our Stage 3+ I5 package, improving response and efficiency while staying within the vanilla stage 3 long blocks torque limits. The stage 3 long block for the UE999 sits at the same torque limit as the 02Y’s stage 3 long block but given that this engine is most commonly found in FWD FCVs, the real limit is the drive train layout, as you can really only put down so much torque in a FWD vehicle. As such, our Stage 3+ package for the UE999 maintains conservative stats relative to the long blocks capabilities, but still a significant amount of power. Gains 118hp and 16lbft over vanilla stage 3 components and uses boost-by-gear to put the power down.

-Stage 3+: This tune dynos at 583hp and 468lbft

    “UE797” 1.6L I4 Product Line:

    screenshot_2023-02-26_22-35-05.png

In Vanilla, the 1.6L i4 has no tuning options aside from the race parts used in the Cherrier Rally cars. A seemingly odd choice, seeing as the Vivace 230s is Cherrier’s “VW Golf”, a sporty mid-range hatch. Arsenic Werks decided to fill this gap in the aftermarket.

Stage 1 Software (for all stock hardware)

The stock E230 ecu was already very close to the torque limits of the UE797's block, leaving little room for improvement on stock hardware. However the stock E230 ECU implements software controlled turbine efficiency (SCTE), which we used along with a strategic timing table to write the 93 octane file. No gain in torque, but bump of 63hp over stock.

    -Stage 1 (93) : This tune dynos at 289hp and 263lbft

To get the punch we wanted on stock hardware, we turned to E85. E85 allows for a 15% increase in overtorque resistance, and using the same SCTE and strategic timing, along with increased boost, we were able to safely push the UE797 further than we could with the limitations of traditional fuel. We were able to gain 103hp and 43lbft over stock, but sacrificing fuel efficiency and ease of startup.

-Stage 1 (E85): This tune dynos at 330hp and 306lbft

Stage 2 Turbo, Software, and Long Block

For the customer committed to the 1.6 platform, we have put together the stage 2 package for the UE787. The stage 2 long block allows for a torque limit well over 400lbft, but that is more of a longevity and reliability decision rather than a limit for us to reach towards. As stated in the UE999 documentation above, that kind of torque has trouble making it to the in FWD vehicles, so we didn’t aim for those numbers, and used boost by gear to cope with traction issues as a result of the added power.

    Stage 2 (93) :
This tune dynos at 357hp and 323lbft

    Stage 2 (E85):
This tune dynos at 394hp and 377lbft

    “UE158d” 2.0L I4 Diesel Product Line:

    screenshot_2023-02-26_22-33-29.png

In vanilla, the 2.0L Diesel has no tuning options whatsoever. Arsenic Werks decided that the diesel powertrains needed some love too, and developed our UE158d product line.

Stage 1 Software (for all stock hardware)

The vanilla Cd190 ECU is already pretty close to the stock long blocks upper torque limit, but we once again utilized SCTE to keep the torque curve in check and unlocked a +10% gain in upper torque limit potential by removing some pesky limiters. Enjoy modest gains of +46hp and +35bft!

    Stage 1:
This tune dynos at 235hp and 331lbft

Stage 2 Software & Hybrid Turbo

Arsenic Werks also offers a further stage, which includes software and a hybrid turbo. A hybrid turbo is a turbo that is a rebuilt and improved version of the manufacturers, in this case Cherrier, stock turbo. The Stage 2 ECU tune offers both a “Low Torque” and a “High Torque” file which gives a heafty bump in power and torque, requiring the use of at least the heavy-duty long block.

Stage 2 (Low Tq): This tune dynos at 294hp and 432lbft (Gains over stock: 105hp & 136lbft)

Stage 2 (High Tq): This tune dynos at 335hp and 493lbft (Gains over stock: 146hp & 197lbft)

    “UE112” 1.2L I3 Product Line:

    screenshot_2023-02-26_22-25-49.png

The UE112 is an incredibly weak motor in stock form. In fact, with the vanilla stage 1 tune, arsenic mode activated via drive mode settings, and an open downpipe you can send a rod into orbit with minimal effort. Nothing more can be done on stock hardware, even with SCTE and other protocols we used in previous product lines. So Arsenic Werks decided dive deeper and see what this little I3 could really do.
Stage 2 Software, Long Block & Hybrid Turbo

Thanks to the modularity of Cherrier’s engines, we developed a cost effective Stage 2 long block that uses vanilla 1.6L I4 internals, along with head studs and a sleeved block, that give the UE112 an upper torque limit of 280lbft. The Stage 2 long block alone gains 10hp and 25lbft and on its own is a good option for owners looking for an increase in reliability. But when combined with our Stage 2 Hybrid Turbo and ECU software, it is more than enough to wake up this little i3, making the 110 models an enjoyable driving experience.

Stage 2: This tune dynos at 274hp and 252lbft

Stage 4 Big Turbo, Software, & Long Block

Arsenic Werks was looking for a project to gather attention to our booth for SEMA 2022. We unveiled our Stage 4 kit for the “02Y” in 2021, so how were we going to top that? While pondering this, one of our employees on his walk into work that day walked past the Cherrier factories “buy-back/recall” lot, full of derelict Vivace and Tograc 110s. Seconds later, he was passed by the Arsenic Werks CFO, driving our 410Q Stage 4 development car, “Kronos”. This employee put two and two together, and took his insane idea to the marketing department. We initially sent him to HR for a psych evaluation, but soon realized he was onto something. Just like that, our “110qs” Stage 4 development vehicle, and our SEMA 2022 show car was born.
We put together a functional 110 between a few of them off the “buy-back” lot and got to work. We had to swap in the 410Q's "Clutchex" AWD system, because we knew we were surpassing reasonable FWD power levels. We dropped in the sleeves and head studs from the stage 2 block, along with everything from the 02Y Stage 4 package, with the exception of the camshafts, which had to be resized. We were left with a Stage 4 UE112 long block with an upper torque limit of 680lbft and a redline of 9500rpm. We wrote the software, and while something felt unnatural about typing in 70psi as the requested boost level while staring at an engine that barely fills the engine bay, it proved to be just fine. The end results?

    Stage 4:
This tune dynos at 715hp and 457lbft @70PSI

We do not plan on stocking this kit, because really why the hell would anyone do this? It is available for purchase , but its made to order with a 6 week lead time, so if for some reason you want to sink this kind of money into a base model Vivace "for the culture", send us an email.

My goodness, I can't get enough of the Stage 4 2.5 I5! You've made a true capsule of condensed power! The way it reaches 9000rpm is really addictive and the I5 scream just makes my heart racing every single time!

The unsung hero is definitely the 1.2 I3, though. Don't really know why the BeamNG devs removed the Heavy-Duty Long Block option in the hotfixes after the 0.19 Update and why it's so pathetically weak to the point where it can't even take a 25kW NOS shot (or even its vanilla full tuning state, with the Stage 1 ECU, the Arsenic mode on and with no exhaust), but you've done it justice again! I've never seen a miniscule engine like that making 720+hp, although I can't imagine what it could've been going through if it were IRL at 4.8 Bar on "Rapidite" mode with the extra boost maxed out in the settings! And it sounds amazing @9500rpm too, like half an 80s V6 F1 car! And this is why we should love I3s as much as I5s!

Amazing job on engine tuning! :-)

Absolutely love the lore-friendliness of this mod. And it's really nice to have some more mild options. One issue I'm having is none of the configs from the pack show up for me, even when I just have it and the related mods enabled. Other than that, this is pretty much perfect

Hi! Thanks for your review. That issue with the config pack was just discussed in the discussion thread and I posted a few options to either fix it yourself or to download the fixed version via my google drive link. There still seems to be an issue with the configs spawning on incorrect wheels with my wheel pack that I am not sure how to rectify at the moment but the proper wheel specs are also listed in the discussion thread so they can be fixed by the user. https://www.beamng.com/threads/arsenic-werks-discusion-thread.91093/
