    The LMT 55 (1995-2005)

It's the late 1990's. The SUV craze is booming. Once a niche market populated by hardcore, go-anywhere machines, the SUV market is now populated by a range of supple, luxury-oriented vehicles that are best suited for tarmac. Hoping to tap further into the ever-growing niche, LMT decided to produce an SUV with a focus on handling ability. To do this, they used the chassis from the LMT 50 executive saloon as a platform, carrying over its Multilink rear and Double Wishbone front suspension, a class first, as well as its engine range and advanced 5 speed automatic transmission.

This is the base model LMT 55 from 1995. Using a 3.0L 24V DOHC Inline 6 from LMT's S32C6 family, it has 205hp, giving it just enough to move the 1900kg SUV. This model did not sell in the US Market, but was the most popular in Europe.

Coming from LMT's heralded FS division, this model stirred controversy as the first AWD model from FS. Despite this, it was still impressive with its powerful 420hp 4.8L V8, making it one of the quickest SUVs of its time, hitting a 0-60 time of 5.2s, and a somewhat impressive driving experience.

In 2000, the entire 55 range was facelifted, receiving a more modern look and more efficient engines. Now, the 3.0 SE features a more efficient 3.0L 24V DOHC Inline 6 from LMT's new S30C6 family, making 205hp.

Perhaps the biggest change in the range, instead of the thirsty 3.5L V8, the 3.5 SE now featured a Turbocharged 3.2L I6 from the older S32C6 family, producing similar power but far more torque, the new 2000 3.5 SE was far more efficient, greatly boosting sales in Europe.

This is the luxury trim featuring a 4.5L 32V DOHC V8 from LMT's S48C8 family. It has 330hp, while being more efficient than the 1995 model, making it a very potent matching. However, this model was not about speed, featuring softer suspension.

For 2000, the FS received slightly more power, but with efficiency upgrades. The biggest news was the more advanced differential and the wider, grippier tyres and upgraded brakes.
