I'm sure this is old news to most of you, but Unreal just came out with a new buisness model to give access to smaller game developers. Unreal link here: https://www.unrealengine.com/

I think there is one more game engine that did the same thing recently, but I forget the name of it ( just remembered, Unity game engine ). Maybe having more competition will mean greater availability and pricing.

Maybe soon we'll start to see much better looking Indie games.

Not Unity3d, the Unity3d price plan has remained identical but Unity3d 5 was shown off recently so has been around in the game dev news. Its cryengine that you are thinking of.

I remember the old UDK you could use for freeware without license, I think that is no longer possible but their price plan is "unreal" and at least the indies can now get some low price stuff out without paying ridiculous licensing fees. Overall the new pricing is far far better than the old, even if the free tier is gone. If I am mistaken and the free tier is available still, even better :D Although I thought that they claimed UDK3 would be kept around for that purpose.

I would just love to see how some of these Beam cars would look being rendered inside the Unreal engine. I wish there was a demo that one could download just to play around with and see.

The new pricing is great. You get the source code for $19. You pay only for updates

I doubt there will be more better looking indie games. Everyone either already used UE3 or Unity3D, and UE4 doesn't really revolutionize anything. Graphics are still heavily dependant on the artists, and artists usually cost the most money, which most indies don't have... hence 2D.
