Back in the early 90s the Covet was still a subcompact, until it was bumped up to be a compact car and replaced by the Ibishu Blues and Ibishu Emblem as Subcompact in the early 2000s

You gotta learn a few things about Euro car segmentation.

 

Civic was a subcompact, like the Swift (and Covet that's based on them). Then Swift stayed in this segment, but Civic (and most likely Covet) moved to compact.

 

Civic is a compact by Euro size classes, and a look at its config palette and desing shows strong inspiration by the Honda Civic.

 

It wasn't back then. It was smaller than compact.

 

It's about the size of a then-contemporary Golf, Kadett or Escort.

 

All of these are at least 10 cm longer than Civic, while Jetta is almost 20 cm longer than the Civic sedan.
