When making a map you can change the depth of the terrain with the ter.depth.png file. The different terrain-materials however also have an impact on the depth-level regardless of the ter.depth.png file. The cars sink into the mud for example.

So my question is, where does the game get the information from, how deep the different terrain-materials are?
Also, some terrains show tiremarks and are slippery while others don't and aren't.

Can someone explain how all that works for me? Thanks!

You can check all the default groundmodels from:
gameengine.zip/art/groundmodel.json (do not edit that file!)

You will see some have pre-defined depth, as well other stuff such as dusts/particles, skidmarks, etc.

If a x.depth.png exists, the game will use that (full black would mean the max. depth for that groundmodel)

    Aha, that explains a lot.
    Very useful answer, thanks!
