Are there any cars in your area that are beaters now, but at least used to be high-end? Here in Puławy, Poland: - A local US market car importer used to have a 70s Jaguar XJ12 and an XJS, both looking like pulled out of a barn or something, - I once saw an old guy in a 70s Mercedes S-Class with faded paint and a loose front bumper, - During a wedding I saw a Mercedes W126 limo with a miscoloured front fender and a missing door plastic panel, - Some guy used to ride around town in a worn-looking XJ40 Jaguar XJ6 on lightweight alloys, - In the ghetto, there is a worn-looking E32 BMW 7-Series with an ad for a car audio installer on the rear window, - Recently, I saw a Volvo V70 T5 with faded paint, a tow hook and a rod knock pull out of my local pizzeria's parking lot, - My dad's friend has a 1st gen Lexus RX300 with bondoed-up rear wheelarches and a shoddy window tint. Any such finds you've had?
W123s in various states of negligence. The occasional W124 or Lancia Thema... Not much else, anything older than 20 years is fairly uncommon sight, beaten or otherwise.
I don't think a W123 is that much of a luxury car, an older executive car becomes an used car just like any other. An S-Class, or XJ, or even a T-series Volvo, on the other hand... that retains an aura of prestige.
Well then, it's kinda difficult to see beaten luxury cars here. Scrappage schemes and restricted traffic zones took most of them off the streets. Classics are usually well-maintained and used executive cars are usually "plate-scrapped" and sent to eastern Europe. Some italian executive sedans of the early '90s (Thema, 164...) still around, but they are becoming increasingly rare.
A lot of luxury cars I see here are beaten up because people think: "Why buy a Toyota if you can buy a (beaten to hell) KEWL BIMMER for the same price?", but here are two notable examples: first generation Audi Q7 with mismatched body panels, spray painted spots, lots of peeling off bondo and rust. Jaguar XF Sportbrake that backfired insanely, leaving clouds of smoke engulfing whole cars behind When I see more I'll post.
I saw a beater vw phaeton once. It was maroon, had peeling paint, tires were deflated, and it was sitting on the side of the road. It was for sale too, the guy was asking for about $4000. Edit I also have seen a Volvo in a demolition derby, and plenty of old Lincolns and Cadillacs in demo derbies as well.
any early 2000's BMW/Benz is a beater in Alberta. Either they are plagued with problems like a typical aged BMW/Merc or they are rusted beyond belief.
