There is no answer for that. All depends on what GPU you are comparing. (It's like saying PS vs Xbox, Apple vs Android, etc.)

Keep in mind that both have their advantages.

    NVIDIA
    Physx
    CUDA
    SLI

    AMD
    Crossfire
    Eyefinity

I go for Nvidia, as I like PhysX in games, and CUDA for renderings.
My GTX660 Direct CU II cost me 180€, which runs BeamNG quite good (SSAO, Full HD, etc.), and all other games too.

V Thanks for expanding the list, I don't know much about ATI Features.

    Eyefinity
    Mantle
    TrueAudio
    Better OpenCL performance
    Can mine cryptocurrencies

A 300$ GPU won't run on a 400w psu, you'll have to change that too.

Battlefield 4 will have Mantle soon, it will give a 45% performance increase in modern amd cards.

Also check how many ampere your PSU can produce in the 12V line. I'm pretty sure it won't be enough for any modern card being a 400w psu that probably came with your PC.

if your budget is 300 bucks, why not try a 760/770 or R9 270 etc ?

you can mine cryptocurriencies with cuda cores too as far as i know? but well, you dont buy a graphic card if you plan to do that :p
I would go with nvidia because of cuda. The programs i use just support cuda yet and i saw a lot of programs using or starting to use cuda but came across very few which offered opencl support ...yet. But it is just a question of time till opencl will get way more ground i think.

I would recommend getting a gtx 760 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DHW4HS4/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER) and a Corsair CX600 600W Power Supply (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0092ML0OC/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER) I know that it is a bit more than what you wanted to spend but you are also getting a new power supply which may be more reliable and efficient than your old one (especially if it is one that came in a pre-built system). I wouldn't go with AMD unless you want it mine Cryptocurrencys or have mantel support (AMD May open Mantel support up to other vendors as well as this has been rumored) as you seem to pay more for the same performance with AMD cards (I think Cryptocurrency mining has had something to do with this)

Mantle will serve you well. You only start to get inflated prices on the AMD R9 280x+. An r9 270 non-x will be a great choice for you. It uses mantle on bf4 and only uses 1x6 pin power connector. You might want to overclock it though to get great fps. Overall a new psu and 760/770/270x might be better though.
