Hey all, sorry to have the saab thread die, and have another new car post here...a dev can delete the "2004 Saab 95" thread, Im no longer working on it. However, I have been steadily at work on this Audi A4 Avant (Wagon). So far, I have the hood, fenders, side skirts, roof and spoiler done, Im working on the doors now. This car has much easier curves, and has thus far taught me a lot on how to model more correctly than I had thought before. I have some progress pics, I wanted to see if I could get any feedback on how my poly flow is looking. I feel like it could always be better than it is now, but this is the furthest I have gotten so far on a car model. And I have only been modeling for a little over 2 weeks now. I feel like Im doing ok so far. Heres some pics, and a wire frame so far. Hood Wire Frame: Fender Wire Frame: Side View w/ blueprint, smoothed: 3/4 View, smoothed: Let me know if Im doing anything wrong as far as you can see, constructive criticism is highly desired, I need to learn a lot more. Thanks for lookin!
Looks very good but a bit too roundy. Try adding Edge Split modifier while it's still "Smooth" and I think it will look better
I don't know how to use the edge split modifier I guess, it doesn't do anything...I select (for example) the fender, and add edge split modifier, but it doesn't do anything...I changed the angle from 30 degrees to 50 or 60 degrees and saw no difference Also, Am I modeling correctly? As in I am modeling each part individually, including the skirts, doors, fenders, etc. I assume that's the correct way to do it since the parts should be separate so they can essentially fall off given a heavy impact?
Doesn't seem to do anything...I select the fender in object mode, after hitting smooth on the left panel, then hit "add modifier", "edge split" and hit apply and it does nothing...strange? EDIT: I figured out how to use that tool...that being said, I need to re poly the fender, because the flow isn't right, and therefor the edge split modifier makes it look crappy. So ill re do that. Learning is fun lol
Go into edit mode, choose everything (CTRL + A) and press W. Now go on ''Remove doubles''. Go back into Object Mode, and add the modfier. Now it should work. (Using Blender 2.49, but normally it shouldn't have changed)
I would model it in flatshade mode until the body shell is done. Then go through and smooth everything.
I was thinking about that whole smooth thing, it must be easier to just smooth it all once its done. I basically have to restart this all over, (didn't get VERY far, only really about an hour or 2's work) I cant seem to re open the A4 avant back in Blender, all I can see is blender files that I started before but not this one...I don't know though, either my blueprints aren't set up right, or Im just not grasping ALL the BASICS to starting a car...trying to follow some tutorials, but its hard to get things like the Hood bulges and door creases, I guess that is why you need a bunch of reference photos besides the blueprints, a lot of my wireframes turn out looking not "grid-like" after I start messing with individual vertices. Im trying to get a good poly flow, I don't want release some lumpy garbage lol Im a quick learner, any quick tips or tools I may not know about, leave them here lol in the meantime, Im watching some more tuts.
I would love if you sent me a PM or posted some of the tutorials that you thought really helped I think I am more of a beginner than you lol. Would love if you gave me some tips on how to model that fender like you did, it's better than what I tried and decided to delete. Here are some pics of my project (I love Audi too) (imported from here) (imported from here)
If you dont finish the A5/S5 ill be very mad.. Got my own S5 on a hdd i cant access due to its on a IDE and im all SATA now :/ http://www.rigsofrods.com/threads/81063-Got-a-Audi-S5-model-anyone-want-it
That is very unfortunate you cannot access them Those models on that thread look great! I am just learning about managing topology and such. Did you model each part of those cars separately, or get a rough outline of the entire car and then add the details?
Yeah its a bummer.. To get the flow of the polys right its in my oppinion easiest to model the whole body in one piece but split the edges at doorlines, hood etc so that its easy to continue with the modelling after the whole outer panels of the body is completed. IMO helps to keep going and finish it if you see the whole body and not just a completed front fender, bumper etc cause then you can see how much there is left
if you want to access that car on the IDE hdd get a ide to sata connecter, they are fairly cheap($5- $15 dollars) heres one i saw on newegg.com http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812232004 On Topic this car is look great! keep up the good work!
Thanks for the tip! Actually got a PCI card with 2 IDE connectors for that task but im a bit lazy and havent installed it after i upgraded my comp
The last reply before yours was on January 2014. It would make sense that there is no more progress to show since then. But because you are new here, please keep in mind that replying to very old threads (also known as bumping) is discouraged here on the forums. When replying to a thread, please check the date of the last reply before adding a comment.
