Actually, the Pinto was not that bad. It was just below average for the era in safety - and IIRC,,the AMC Ambassador had similar problem. The metal fuel tank behind the rear axle + RWD layout is unsafe in general.
Technically, the production of those batteries that are made in those cars create more pollution than an average four cylinder will in it's average lifetime.
