I was thinking pentuim D but the AMD one is only at 2ghz, and it runs a lot cooler than i expected. I got given 4 HP systems with this CPU and idk if its good or not, they are business machines.

Its quite a dated CPU coming out in 2005/2006 but it was around that time that AMD had a big performance lead in CPUs. As far as I know none of the Pentium CPUs from the time are as fast as it, for that you would have to look at some of the Core 2 Duos or Pentiums that came around around mid to late 2007 which where around the same performance with the higher end models being a bit faster. For reference a Intel Pentium E2180 is about the same performance wise albeit a year newer.

As for general use and so on these days, they are probably capable of playing some older games, say pre 2010. While stuff like browsing would also be reasonably good, but they won't be useful for much else as they are some of the oldest dual cores around so they are quite slow.

AMD had a massive advantage during that era in terms of performance. but for a equivalent maybe a core 2 duo from 2007.

Core 2 Duos were leaps and bounds ahead of an Athlon 64 by the time they were released.

I'd say a Pentium-D would be comparable in performance.
