What CPU should I get?

Pretty self explanatory but I need some secondary opinions on what CPU to get.
Preferably Intel (Nothing against AMD just want a good high end CPU for cheap)
Under 500 dollars, motherboard and RAM included.
Capable of playing most if not all games at 1080p to 1440p, 60 FPS.
Compatible with Windows 7, and AMD GPU's.
I'm currently running an old AMD Athlon II X4 630 with 12GB of DDR3 RAM, obviously not cutting it, plus it's a severe bottleneck to my GPU, Sapphire Nitro Radeon R9 390X 8GB at 1.1GHz
Oh btw, don't tell me to wait for AMD's new Zen or whatever, don't want it and we have no idea how it's gonna perform, especially in games.

 

i would recommend the i5-4690k or the i5-6600k, about the same performance.

the 4690k is a little faster while the 6600k is on a slightly newer socket - both should overclock well in case you need more power in the future.
buy the one you can get cheaper.
you will easily stay under your 500 dollar budget.

i am running a 4690k overclocked to 4.4ghz havent had problems with any game,
even at stock clock i could run multiple large trucks in beamng at 60fps.

going i7 isnt worth it for gaming and much more expensive.

edit: i think the 4690k would be the better choice for you because of the 1150 socket.
you could re-use the ddr3 ram you already have.
12gb are easily enough - i run 8gb and have not run into problems yet.
the i5 4690k with a compatible mainboard will cost you about 400 bucks.

 

I was actually thinking about that CPU quite a bit, and that's good, I can use the extra money on RAM since mine is only 1300MHz I believe. Thanks What motherboard would you recommend? I think I'm gonna go with the MSI Gaming Z97, it has the best rating

 

I would say go with an overclockable i5, with a Z-series mother board to go with it (obviously). But whatever you do, go Skylake. Kaby lake processors have the same socket as Skylake processors do, making them easily upgradable.

TL;DR: go with an overclockable Skylake I5.

 

I'm gonna stick with the 4690K, it's better than the 6600K and still overclockable, which isn't too big of a deal anyway since it's at 3.5GHz already.

 

Wait. Ryzen (previously known as Zen) and Kaby Lake CPUs are coming early next year.

 

i think the z97 is a solid choice.
im running a Z87-G43 and im satisfied with it, i havent tried any other 1150 motherboards.

you might want the 6600k because the new 1151 socket motherboards run on ddr4 ram, which is faster.
might make sense if you plan on getting new ram anyway.
i think the 6600k is even cheaper than the 4690k.

 

But it's slightly slower, and DDR4 RAM is too expensive, a 16GB kit would be like 150 -200 dollars, plus I'm not one to get something just 'cause it's newer, that just means compatibility updates, updates, and usually more expensive in the long run.

I said I wasn't interested in those specifically because we don't really know how they are gonna perform, and I can imagine the new Intel's are going to be ridiculously expensive. Plus they're newer, like I said in my previous post, that usually means issues.

As far as I know DDR4 RAM isn't so expensive. Depending on speed, it starts at about 100$ for a decent kit. If I remember correctly, speed doesn't make that big of a difference

Yes,that was 8gb, but get 2 of them and it's only 80 bucks. Not bad for some fast ram

 

So after you're guy's comments I'm thinking about waiting for either AMD Ryzen or Intel Kaby Lake. Ryzen is supposed to be on par and occasionally better than the Intel Core i7-6900K and Kaby Lake is probably going to be on par or better than AMD Ryzen. The new top of the line i5 is coming in January for 239 dollars so I would imagine it's gonna be awesome, plus I do need to update to Windows 10, and as long as DDR4 RAM is cheap enough to get a 16GB kit.

 

In the US, a decent kit is going for about $75 right now.

 

I'm still thinking about just going i5 6600K, it's the best option honestly. I'd like to get the new i5 7 something but I'd have to update to Windows 10 and it could turn out to be kinda crappy. And I did some research, the difference in performance between DDR4 and DDR3 is literally 1 frame between like 30 games, in fact DDR3 is faster is some of the older titles (Which I mainly play) But it doesn't matter, the motherboard I have bookmarked uses DDR4

Ddr3 still gets the job done. if I could have re used it for skylake I would have.

 

windows 10 is quite nice despite all the hate it got.
i went from using windows 8 back to 7 because it was awful, but im satisfied with 10.

 

Windows 10 is nice, dx12 and Kaby lake support. The only cons are the tracking and update situation. But those are both disableable.
And BTW, I think skylake and kaby lake are both compatible with ddr3l.

Under 500, I'd recommend a nonoverclock able i7 or xeon, but if you want to oc, an i5 will work as well.
