Correct me if I'm wrong, but I recall reading an article with an interview in which the team stated that hollywood had approached them, asking to use the physics engine to test out vehicle crashes before going out and doing it with actual vehicles.
I think BeamNG soft body physics would be very useful to companies who make movies. They would be able to simulate car crashes a lot easier and faster in CGI.
One core problem is... would other gamers want such a realistic driving experience? Look at all these driving games out there. Nearly all are arcadey and some "realistic". When a game hints at the slightest bit of realism, most players go nuts and say the handling is terrible because they can't go around a 90 degree turn going 150 km/h since they think that's how physics work. These same players don't want to actually take the time to learn the driving, they just want to slam their foot on the accelerator and have the vehicle drive itself like it's on rails. Imagine if players realised they couldn't just slam their car into the guardrail and scrape it along the turn because it would damage the car? A good example is GTA IV to GTA V. While GTA IV wasn't necessarily 100% realistic with its driving, players complained because they had to spend more than 5 minutes getting the hang of it, so then it was dumbed down to GTA V where every vehicle handles the same on any surface. Shame how gaming companies have to dumb down and hold the players hand for everything nowadays. That's why I love BeamNG, because you have to really get a feel for the vehicle you're driving and take care to ensure you don't total it.
Late reply, but. They dont awwww my dream has beem crushed. --- Post updated --- The GTA V part is absolute rubbish. Have you ever played GTA V? dirt and grass is completly different. And a truck vs a sports car or even a sedan handles different.
I want BeamNG's softbody physics is a racing sim, like iRacing. Sim racers pride themselves in racing fast and clean and the realistic damage softbody physics would provide would reward you for clean racing.
Not really, i've got more than enough time in GTA5 to tell, all vehicles handle near identically, dirt doesnt change a whole lot.
I've got over 900 hours on PC alone and I'm big into racing in the game. When you play it at a high level there's a lot more to it than meets the eye I don't think that is a good example. While, yes, there certainly were people who felt that way I didn't like GTA IV's driving physics. I love my sim racers but GTA IV's physics are what I'd describe as hyper-realism; They try way too hard to be realistic and overshoot massively, leaving an experience that just isn't fun. The sheer amount of body roll in IVs cars is absurd. V's physics aren't "dumbed down" like you seem to suggest. If anything, V's physics is even more complex than IV's. It's just that they gave the cars more grip and less body roll and so on to make the driving more arcadey. While it's certainly easier it's more fun IMO
