BeamNG drive needs different windshield damage, not the basic complete shatter it should crack differenty at different speeds and angles.
Actually, the windshield damage is pretty realistic as-is. Modern windshields are made of safety glass and plastic. On impact, the windshield will crack, but will never "explode" or shatter. It would be nice to have old windshields on old cars, as well as the ability for modern windshields to fall out of their frames once damaged to a certain extent. Either way, here's what I'm talking about. The windshield did not "explode", but rather, acts sort of like a sheet. It bends. (also, note: it's staying in one piece but around the corners it has come loose from the frame. I'd like that in the game.)
Correct me if i'm wrong, but to accomplish this sort of windshield damage accuracy and variety would you not need to have a Jbeam different from the standard one in the way that it behaves. And wouldn't this run into precisely the same or similiar problem as tearing cars apart in the meshes staying connected?
It would be pointless to make countless different textures and mesh cracks for the windshield of each car. All they really need is some decent particle effects, especially for the side windows. Visually dynamic glass damage would be a nice way of doing things but who knows if that will come and if it does it wont be anytime soon.
I think the biggest and easiest improvement that could currently be made to the broken glass effects is for windows not to break quite so easily! Front windscreens/shields seem to shatter in minor collisions and regardless of where on the vehicle the impact takes place. Even the side windows break too easily - a minor bump into a door panel doesn't usually take the glass out in the real world.
