Hey map builders, I've created a tool that can generate material distribution maps, mask maps, and various statistical charts from .ter files as plugins, with export support included. It also features direct 3D preview of simplified terrain models containing height data and material distribution. Open source: https://gitee.com/slimeabc/BeamNG-Terrain-Tool (GPL 3.0) Since packaging it into an exe would be too large (around 400+ MB), you'll currently need to install the required libraries and run the .py file instead—sorry about that! Installation: Code: pip install matplotlib numpy pillow scipy glfw PyGLM moderngl Truth is, right now this software isn't particularly useful beyond exporting material masks, creating basecolor textures, and viewing map information overviews. More features may be added in future updates. *(Apologies for my poor English and for any incomplete translations in the software)*
I did more or less the same in my tool. Take a look at the basecolor manager where you can switch your map between a paintmode with solid colors and a basecolor mode for generating the better looking basecolormap. Would be nice to discuss it with you. https://www.beamng.com/threads/beamng-mapping-tools-updated-2026-06-01.89058/
Thanks for this nice little tool! I like the fact that it's written in Python very much so I can understand some things more deeply and can edit it very easily without compiling. To have access to the .ter file through Python now is magic to me. It's a great starting point for some experiments and science. Also it's ok for me that you provided this little file size (only source code). Although the only way for me to change the language was to change the code: line 847 return self.language_data.get('locale', 'en-us') I also encountered that all the output bitmaps and the 3D view are upside down (north to south mirrored). BeamNG uses them in that mirrored way but that's not the way you actually see the map when you open it in game. So maybe you can flip them? The tool It's not comparable to AlexKidd71's tool in any way IMO. It's a completely different approach. They are not in competition with each other. So keep please up the great work!
Your program is absolutely fantastic — it's practically one of the cornerstones of BeamNG map creation! I've actually been using it since shortly after you first created this GitHub project, and many of my maps have relied on your tools. It's been incredibly helpful! I ended up building my own tool because I needed a way to get a terrain overview and export a simplified basecolor for use in other programs / map-making workflows, since I couldn't find this functionality in your program (specifically, reading existing maps and exporting the relevant data). Anyway, thank you so much for everything! --- Post updated --- Thanks for your kind words! I'll look into fixing that when I get some time.
