I guess it's just for getting the update earlier than repo approval (the mod can be seen in OP's profile)
The official BeamNG documentation already mentions that you should replace .PNG textures with .DDS textures. They made the Texture Cooker to do half of the job for you (ie; converting .PNG to .DDS), but you have to grab the converted .DDS textures from the temp folder and replace the old .PNG textures. I dunno why they allowed mods that came with .PNG textures in the first place, honestly. Anyway, source of said documentation: https://documentation.beamng.com/modding/materials/texture_cooker/ And here's the part mentioning what I already said: --- Post updated --- Also, .PNG textures are barely compressed when you zip a mod, whereas .DDS textures are actually compressed resulting in an overall smaller filesize.
For me, my computer lacks so much performance that even the texture cooker causes the game to freeze for a while
Hence why you don't want .PNG textures in a mod. My PC is mid-range (old-ish mid-range, I'd say), and the game can crash when loading a car from a mod with no proper .DDS textures on it because the Texture Cooker is going full-on converting every single texture from that mod. And as some players may not know about the temp folder or about replacing textures, once you clear the cache, the same process will happen again.
I'm not against dds textures, I'm just explaining why i think mods with png textures shouldn't be banned permanantly
The thing is, the mod isn't banned. The old version is still available on the repo. saaaalleeeeeenn has been asked to replace the old .PNG textures with properly converted .DDS textures. Why they didn't ask that when the mod was initially released is beyond me. But this affects other mods from the repo, either way.
Could be, but as of now modding isn't even confirmed for the PS5/PS5 Pro. But indenpendently of the game coming to PS5 or not, the modding guidelines and official Documentation are there for a reason.
convert png files to dds is a complicated job, the dds files in temp folder are all wrong name, that's mean i need to change their name
It is not that difficult. As I already explained more than once, the Texture Cooker does half of the job for you. And the files are named the same, only the extension changes... The Texture Cooker doesn't change the name at all, otherwise it wouldn't work correctly as the game would be trying to convert the texture infinitely. --- Post updated --- Btw, if by "wrong name" you mean the extensions in the material.json texture paths end in .PNG while the files themselves are .DDS, that's actually intended (check the Texture Cooker Documentation).
