Anyone who owns Assetto Corsa EVO (don't bother replying if you don't have the game), is it any good in its current state?

I'm currently debating on if I should buy it, wait for a later release, or pass on it entirely.

I don't own it, and probably won't. I think it doesn't have the mod support of AC and won't. Plus there's ACC or iracing for racing, Evo doesn't do anything for me

I'll pass. Single player progression is online-only

That has been changed, now with 0.3 version game is normally offline for single player.

AI is horribly slow, but they train crash from behind much less than in original AC. What I mean by horribly slow is that I'm easily 2.5 seconds faster each lap with difficulty set to maximum and guys who can drive are probably 2.5 seconds faster than I am, or even more, so AI is useful only if you give them faster cars than what you are driving.

So it is pretty much hotlapping with yourself for now.

0.4 is rumored to have modding tools support, should arrive this month, but as it has been delayed already previously it might be delayed again.

Multiplayer is behind paywall what I have read, so that is huge negative at the moment at least.

Race cars are skittish, even low powered MX-5 spins out much easier than street variant, rumor is that there would be changes to handling in upcoming 0.4 update.

For now, I feel that buy only if you want to support development, but there is no guarantee anymore than there is with lottery.

I do like the game, it has some nice features like possibility to set 10 different buttons for different wiper speeds, not really sure how useful that is, but really only thing to do seems to be trying to get better laptime than I did at previous lap.

FFB might need some tampering to get good feeling of weight transfer, default settings are not providing exactly the most interesting FFB feel.

Menus when setting controls are also somewhat different, you have a line of devices that is easy to miss, but you need to select correct device from that line as it filters your inputs to that specific controller, so it is easy to have keyboard selected and no matter what you do, it is not possible to get input recognized, but selecting correct device fixes that. Another problem is that there are device names in that single horizontal line that you don't have, but color difference between lighter gray and darker gray is so small it is hard to spot which is connected and which is not.

Handling of cars is also somewhat different than what there was with original AC, now it is perhaps much easier to rotate car with carefully adjusting brake pressure and timing braking correctly, weight transfer I think plays larger role than in original AC, but this all is with street tires, racing slicks are slide and spin type for now, at least I can't make heads or tails of them, in other games I can balance at edge of the grip when exiting from corner, but in EVO handling reminds me from early versions of first rFactor which I remember having similar slip and spin type of handling.

If you’re on the fence, I’d probably wait. Right now it feels pretty limited, especially compared to AC with mods or ACC/iRacing. The online-only progression is also a turn-off for a lot of people. Might be worth revisiting after a few major updates.
