No longer in development. As of 5/19/25 the mod works on v0.35.

This is the discussion thread for Cob's Particle Overhaul. Here you can report bugs, discuss the mod, and provide suggestions and feedback. The mod's goal is to remake most vanilla collision and friction particles from the ground up, providing some-what more realistic, and much more cinematic visuals.

    Current Content (b5):
    - Completely remade smoke, sand, mud, spark and plastic particles.
    - Tweaked appearances and behaviors of various friction particles, such as sand, tire smoke, and mud.
    - New particles where there were not particles before.
    - Exaggerated crash and impact particles.
    - Adjustments to particle lifespans, colors, spinrates, gravity etc.

    - Organized (to the best of my current ability) and somewhat better documented particles.json file, so you yourself can take a look inside and make tweaks to it as well.

View thread for in depth look into each update and screenshots.

I don't have an estimate as to when the final version will be released, however I will say I have put a lot of time and effort into this the past week and have made some decent progress. I will keep this thread updated with what I am working on, and post smaller updates here as well.

I have attached what I will call phase one of the friction particle's remake.

    CHANGELOG:

    - Some new art for smoke particles.
    - Minor changes to sand particle art.
    - Minor changes to mud particle art.
    - Sand particles have been fully reworked, I've utilized three different particles to get a dense look near the tires and a smooth transition into a thin cloud of sand. I am happy with the final product and these likely won't get any more changes.
    Screenshot2025-02-16203214.png

    - Tire smoke on asphalt has been reworked and is still subject to change. The philosophy is similar to the sand particles, however I don't think its quite right yet and will need some more tuning.
    - Dirty dust road particles have been reworked, much more dust and rocks will be kicked up, along with dust sitting stagnant in the air for quite some time. It gives a pretty nice rallying experience. May get some changes in the future.
    Screenshot2025-02-17200151.png

    - Mud has gotten some minor changes, but still needs a lot of work.
    - Wet surfaces will kick up more water at higher velocities.
    - More grass particles will get picked up when driving on grass.
    - Tire smoke will now also emit on cobblestone, just in lower quantities.
    - Quite a bit of changes have been made to managedParticleData.json, changing the lifespan, colors, gravity and spinrates of various particles.
    - Particles.json file has been cleaned up a little bit and I added some more documentation of what particles are what for anyone that wants to look in there and make their own changes.

Noticed an issue with the recent version's sand and plastic particles. Updated the post with a fixed version. This version also includes some more improvements to tire smoke on asphalt.

Hello! I am pushing an update to the main post. Changes will be listed below.

Progress has been slow, but not static these passed three to four weeks. I had issues with particles flickering, which was a challenging problem to overcome - there may be some unintended changes as a result. I've also been struggling with lack of motivation; however, I've learned quite a lot and hopefully that will reflect at least a tiny bit in this update. There have also been some changes to my setup and my workflow which will hopefully benefit productivity in the future.

I literally just solved the particle flickering issue tonight, and wanted to push an update to confirm I was at least still alive here lol

    CHANGELOG:

    - Smoke particle art has been reworked again, completely hand crafted this time.
    - All three smoke particles are being utilized now for tire smoke, in comparison to only two of them being used before.
    Screenshot2025-03-27232300.png

    - Very minor tweaks to smaller smoke details like steam, and exhaust condensation to fit with the new smoke art.
    - Smoke particles have been tweaked slightly, there are still some fading out and popping out issues that I would like to address in the next update.
Smoke is now way more diverse compared to the first version of the mod. I followed the same philosophy as I did the sand particles; creating more variety depending on velocity and traction.
High speed vs. low speed examples below.
    Screenshot2025-03-27231124.png Screenshot2025-03-27231153.png

    - Small tweaks made to sand particle art, transition between different particles should now be smoother.
    - Mud splash art has been remade by hand, and mud particles have overall been tweaked and reconfigured; more improvements to come in the future.
    Screenshot2025-03-27231542.png

    - Most of the p
articles I've worked on should behave more realistically with lighting, some particles were way to opaque in the past, this has been fixed.

Next update, I would like to have the mud particles completely reworked and looking good, and make my final changes to wet surface particles as well.

Make sure to delete any old versions of the mod you may have before updating.

Pushing a minor update to the main post.

As of now, I believe most if not all of the significant traction related particles have been completed. I have noticed that the sand particles have suffered in quality after I fixed the particle flickering issue, so I will need to return and readjust those - but other than that, I will now pursue the collision particles.

    CHANGELOG:
    - Finished reworking the mud particles, two arts have been remade by hand.
Mud will have a chunkier appearance as it gets kicked up and then transition into a thick mist. Mud particles can be considered complete.

    - Final tweaks to the tire smoke particles have been made,
You can now create super thick and long plumes of smoke while sliding/drifting at higher speeds, additionally smoke near the tires will take on more velocity and be thrown further outwards.
    Screenshot2025-03-28214957.png
    - Tire smoke no longer pops out of existence, fading still looks a little off, but I do not have a solution to this. I believe it looks sufficient, or at least leagues better than vanilla lol

    - Blue smoke particle has been adjusted to match the style of the new smoke particles.
    - Grass dust particle has been adjusted to fit the style of other dust particles.
    - Minor changes to the slippery surface particles have been made, less water will get kicked up and a small mist will always be visible when driving on these surfaces.

Next update will provide the final tweaks to sand, and likely the first changes to collision particles. :D

    Edit: Removed unused images.
