I tried to replicate this in game with things such as traffic AI and "chase me" AI, but none of them made satisfying or realistic results. The racing AI behavior would be similar to traffic AI, except they of course try to go faster and take more risky and offensive driving paths, cutting off other racers and attempting to pass those that are slower than them. Maybe you can even set an end point to where they will drive to. What do y'all think? I would really like to see this in game, it would make setting up races a lot more fun and easy.
iirc, there's a ui app that lets you create custom checkpoints, but i'm not too sure it exists. if you want more risky ai on regular roads, you can use the traffic ui app and increase the risk all the way
Yeah, it exists. Only problem is with the AI, it doesn't seem to "see" the track, only the checkpoints. So it drives very slowly even around the longest sweeper. Wish we could get some improvements someday.
Well in that case, i think there's also a pathing tool that fixes that exact issue, but it's also probably not the best for races Also, I've never tested it before, but does the AI go the same speed you were going while you were setting the checkpoints? That might be the reason for the slow AI
An AI racing mode that you could access through the radial menu would be awesome! It could make nearby cars race against you through a random course, and maybe if police are enabled they could actually start chasing you for racing!
Yeah, they go off the route you took I'm pretty sure, so you have to be absolutely cooking around a course for them to drive quickly, so if you go too slow when setting checkpoints, they'll go even slower
For anyone curious, it's the "Hotlapping UI" under UI apps. Also, just to clear some things up: -This mode already takes AI pathing into account, if the AI goes off track it's because the paths themselves are incorrect, which is the responsibility of the map creator. -The AI drives between the checkpoints as quickly as it deems possible. To make the AI go faster, you would essentially need to program a self-driving racecar to analyze things like track banking, friction coefficients, vehicle cornering ability, and much, much more, all in real time. Other racing games don't need this because they have much simpler physics simulations and usually a manageable number of planned track and car combinations to test and refine. Although I love the idea, there honestly isn't much more that could be done right now. I mean, just spawn one other car, set it to "flee" and try to chase it. You'll see how far away we still are from letting multiple AI rip around a random path at full speed. ;P
I recall the Hotlapping system was pretty bad in terms of how the AI behaved, as last time I checked the cars were not aware of each other and would just crash into each other trying to follow the same route, something which doesn't happen in AI Racing missions... Not sure if it has changed it has been a while since I tried it
It has changed a bit, at least in my testing the AI now gives each other room. The big problem now is that they're actually a little too forgiving, and they'll slam on the brakes rather than tap you if you pull in front of them XP
