Hello there, I haven't made a map mod in quite some time, and after so I have decided that I was going to make a scaled-down version of Tasmania. I have created a heightmap of the entire state of Tasmania from some website I have forgotten already. It is 4096x4096 (maximum size that BeamNG supports I think), and it's going to be a 16km x 16km scaled down version of the island state. I was originally considering 32km x 32km, but maybe that is a stretch for BeamNG the way it is. I was just wondering if this is going to be a realistic proposition, with scaled down heights, or if I'm better off with another map project. Also, if this is going to be a realistic proposition, I also want to have a map overlay of the road network, so I can create realistic roads. How do I go about doing that once I've created a new map? Looking forward to hearing back from someone soon for guidance. If anyone wants the heightmap for consideration, please do let me know.
Im from tasmania, have you considered trying bruny island, nice roads down there and probably a way easier scale to manage, either way would be awesome to see some of tassie in the game
Hey, 16x16 would technically be possible, however I advise to use 12x12 as a maximum size. Why? BeamNg supports a maximum of 4096x4096 as you also said. So when you enlarge it, the resolution gets worse, naturally. I did some testing for the maps I made and at some point the ground resolution just gets too bad. That means: the transition between different ground surfaces becomes very visible. So 32x32 is no good idea. 16x16 you can try for a test. This map is 12x12, the terrain detail is far worse than on 4x4 maps but it is still somewhat tolerable.
Thanks, I noticed that the link is one of your own maps. Do you think you can help me with some heightmap stuff? Honestly I wasn't expecting a reply back. Also, speaking of heightmap, do you want the heightmap I created to see if it works on your computer? So that I don't have to go use terrain generation software?
What do you need help with? I think I can tell you most basic things or point you to the right tutorials etc. Just post the heightmap here but I guess any heightmap should work and you can try it in the editor in 5 minutes. Just to see the basic shape. This is the tutorial that got me started on the whole file setup and also importing a heightmap and textures. Its long but it covers almost everything.
Thanks, I'll get looking into it when I have the time. Here is the heightmap I got from some website (Can't remember the name exactly) and I haven't really had the time to test it out myself, as I had more important things to do at the moment.
