To clear it up, that's the bumper cover the plastic bit. The actual bumper is a metal bar underneith. Remove the front bumper of the grand marshal, the real bumper is the black bar in front of the radiator.

Here's the real bumper on a modern car. i find it kind of annoying actually. The original purpose of a bumper was to protect the expensive bodywork in low speed collisions.... and they've moved it back behind epxensive bodywork... so now it doesn't do it's job.

Except the plastic chosen for the bumper covers bends and pops back into shape after a collision anyway. That is unless its a collision in which he bumper really isn't going to help anyway.

it... it tries to. but the IHS videos show differently. a 5mph impact to test the bumper, something that cars have been able to pass since the 70's, now does thousands in damage to the car.

Bumpers don't cost thousands of dollars, besides, the focus has shifted to aerodynamics and weight. My plastic bumper does exactly what a metal bumper can do minus the damage to the other guys car.

    Hence:

I've seen a truck with one smash into a car at almost 50Mph and get the bullbar bent. The car was totaled.

mmmh... yeah, depends on your car. These days the plastic bumpers are manufactured to withstand an impact of 2.5mph, as opposed to the 1970's spec of 5mph. It's a step backward because while the bumper itself doesn't cost thousands it's flimsy enough so that thousands worth of damage can be done to expensive things. Lots of modern cars have issues due to styling cues that cause the front bumper to ride under the back of another car and do significant damage to the hood and lights, also bending the radiator support.
