Another way one could think of it as buying a onetime experience, or limited time. The who ownership thing is going to fade more and more over time. It is already happening. Digital only content, that servers close after a few years. Programs that one could buy are now monthly paid plans to use is another example. Game pass is another example. Renting games rather than buying them. As far as mods. I think with any mods, it should be expected that things can break with new game updates. I would not personally charge for mods for the reason of them breaking and having to go back and fix them all. That is the work that keeps on giving and I dont like work Give it to people free and they cannot complain. The code thing... I have not downloaded any mods outside of a friend's mods, and repo. I suspect people are leaking them with malicious code.. I could see how that could happen.
Mods can be made very robust though, such as standalone cars that don't reuse content from any vanilla cars
This may be a minute oversight on your part good sir, but surely you must comprehend that the 'official' add-on repository will not be around for all of eternity, and at a point these add-ons will be misplaced by the sands of time? How would one access a hypothetical purchased add-on, if the storefront had up and vanished? There not be a single answer that does not undermine the very discussions held within this thread.
But you still have to pay for it. You can grow it yourself, sure, but you need the resources (time, space, skill). Same with paid mods. Except you need food. There are two parts to all of this (in my view). The first is 'should people be allowed to make paid mods?' To which, for me, the answer is yes. The devs allow it, and people can charge for something they made (assuming they actually made it), that is the world we live in. Second is 'should people buy paid mods'. To which the answer is no (in my opinion). Despite the above, I don't like paid mods. I don't buy them and I don't charge for mine (back when I made them at least). Of course if you have the money, then fine, but even then, it encourages more mods to be paid and with the range of quality, it is at times a lottery. I also think there is plenty of content without it on BeamNG.
I've been lurking on this issue for a while and it is genuinely astounding to me how people get so upset over mods that cost less than a cheap meal. It's not like you absolutely have to buy these mods, or have them, you can just see a mod that costs to much and say welp guess I won't be getting that and move on with your life. Even in the impossible situation that every mod is paid then so what, sure it sucks but it's not like you were ever guaranteed these other peoples creations? I'd argue most paid mods are undervaluing their work a ton anyways. I'd also argue for that price you shouldn't really expect them to last eternally, and if you do want that just learn how to maintain mods. And again, free mods still exist, there's tons of them. There are some paid mods out there that absolutely are not worth their price, so just don't buy them. With that I hope my opinion wasn't too controversial. I can get why some of the older forum members might be frustrated about paid mods, they didn't really exist in the early days of beam, but I think its good to remember there were way more modders back in 2013-2015 and the bar for mods was way lower.
Alas good sir, your apprehension is misplaced. The repository is not requisite for the use of the modification by the more prudent of patrons, as it is possible to retain a copy of the modification on one's physical data storage receptacle, circumventing any need for an ongoing connection to this inter-net. The ongoing concern in this instance, rather, is that of forwards-compatibility. In presuming that Sir Thomas of Development and his fellow artisans will continue unabated in the further development of this software, it will become increasingly likely through the passage of time that morsels of this software upon which such modifications rely will be altered and replaced, leaving them to languish in an error-laden, corrupted state. This latter concern has been rightfully addressed preemptively by Sir Turbo49, as modifications of finer quality do not rely on the aforementioned morsels of software, and thus are unsusceptible to such corruption.
Ok this is a bump, but what about kenemation? Im rlly sorry abt this bump but im genuinely curious on your guys opinions on him
I have obtained some of the mods. They aren't that good imo. I always stick to the paid mods on the forums, they're always superior (and legal, unlike kenne mods).
thats why i have been trying finally getting somewhere paying a guy to jbeam the hoonitruck for me i think at end of just this one mod ima be out some like 200 bucks but idc i feel like yes its my hard earned money but other people should enjoy it as much as i will and if i did make it paid its not fair to younger people who want it but cant get it thats why leaks happen to other websites if it goes on modland congrats im here to enjoy game
