This could also be related to running out of VRAM. Please use Task Manager > Performance > GPU to keep an eye on that gpu memory.

    Thank you! :)
I've forwarded to the relevant people, thanks for reporting.

Bit of a late response to this, but your issue is as I suspected a lack of VRAM, while a 3060 would normally be plenty to run pretty much anything at a good framerate, being the laptop version it has a lower VRAM capacity than the full sized card.

Normally this wouldn't be too big of an issue as the speed of the card would mostly make up for this, but due to the way BeamNG's VR mode seems to be set up it favors high VRAM capacity rather than a faster card, so the 6GB of VRAM you have is all being used, and the game still needs more, this means that your VR software isn't getting the amount it needs and it kills your framerate.

Hopefully the devs can figure something out to lower that required amount, as the 8GB I have is also just barely not enough to run all the maps without issue.

Well, 7.5 Go of vram usage on the 8 of my 3070rtx (everything closed like steam and stuff. Just oculus running and sim racing studio (change 0.2 of vram) for the motion sim). No shadow in game, the rest in médium setting).

This sounds as if it's a feature?

I can't walk around normally, like check out the damage to the car, once I reach a certain point in trying to move around I suddenly face the other way.
My guess was it has to do with the mouse wandering off to the different screen and suddenly resetting the position in the game.
Yesterday I wanted to exit my car dangling nexto a cliff, for some reason I exited on the wrong side of the car and dropped down. Tried to walk back and was a huge pain in the butt. I couldn't look forward and had to press forward/left to go straight, because if I turned just a tad more to face that direction, I'd get reset the other way.

Oh, ps: I'm liking the experience, have some kinks to work out and need to put some more time into it, finding the right settings, mostly since I'm using PSVR and it's the first time I'm doing it, so motion sensing isn't what it's supposed to be right now. But I already feel it's really cool and once setup properly, I'm really going to enjoy this! Seems like I'm the only one using PSVR at the moment though, reading here :-D

Does anyone know if it's possible to launch Vulcan api in safe mode WITHOUT debug mode? It would save me the hassle of manually removing mods to play in VR, since with all my mods I'm having constant crashes. Debug mode makes the game run at 2fps.

If you happen to use steamVR and it's currently active, then vulkan will be automatically selected no matter if you choose vulkan or directx in the launcher.
If you don't use steamVR, use -gfx vk as cmdline parameters.

In free cam the camera works as I would expect it to. WASD to move fwd, back, left and right with the mouse acting as directional movement holding RMB. But in 1st person mode, if I try and use the mouse, the camera flashes back and forth 180 degrees if I happen to move the mouse backwards in any way at all.

Can I remove this setting in any settings or config files? 1st person is effectively unuseable in VR as it stands.

    Hello everyone.
I just registered to let the team know the following:
I have tried Beamng.drive VR with a rather outdated setup, that goes through quite an exhausting effort when pulling through.
    My setup right now:
    CPU:AMD FX 8350 4 phisical cores with 8 threads, 4Ghz.
    Motherboard: Asus M5A78M-L/USB3
    RAM: 16GB DDR3
    GPU:: Asus GTX 970 4GB GDDR5
    OS: Win 10 64 bits
VR: Oculus Quest 1 64GB with Oculus Link and no SteamVR

    Graphics settings: Lowest

VR perfo: a tiny pinch below acceptable. It's got its places where framerate drops to the point of agony, but it is still fun to go through.
Any other technical detail I should add, just let me know.

Hi Stenyak, I'm having the same issue with my Varjo Aero (most recent BeamNG Version, freshly installed yesterday), keeps crashing instantly when trying to enter VR Mode (running on Varjo Open XR). Have submitted a ticket, # 166364 to help you guys figure it out... Havent dared to try the workaround with using Steam VR as open XR runtime since I'm not sure how to get the steam VR App to switch back and use Varjo Open VR for my other sims (there is just a button for setting Steam VR as runtime but no button to reverse it...If anyone has some advice on this, this would be highly appreciated!). From other sims I know it really hits your framerate when you have to take the detour via Steam VR, so being able to use Varjo Open XR would sure be a major improvement to performance. BeamNG in VR is an absolute dream for me, can't thank you guys enough for working on this !!!!!
    --- Post updated ---
Edit to my prior post (cant edit within the post for some reason...): Workaround for Varjo via Steam VR works theoretically, but not practically. Unplayable on account of stuttering and stability issues (running a 4090 and an i9 13900). But "patience is the key to happiness", when it will work it will be awesome!

I've tried searching this thread, but I can't find any info on if anyone has found a workaround for the Valve Index to get it so send audio through its speakers instead of just through the desktop speakers.

Does anyone know of a workaround or if this problem has been ticketed for a future hotfix?

P.S. Thank you so much everyone involved and the community for finding out how to make VR work in BeamNG! It's amazing!

As mentioned in my previous message, this was already added to the list of known issues. So you either disable the snap turn option, or you wait until a future update for the fix :)

Thanks for the info, I'm surprised it is almost acceptable! Those gtx970 have too little VRAM, and on top of that, their last 0.5gb of VRAM are slower than the first 3.5GB, so you'll experience worse framerates before you actually fill their memory.

This is a known issue, we had a fix ready however this audio fix was breaking any mods that used custom sounds, so we had to abort its release. We're currently trying to figure out a solution to that problem.

The audio workaround mentioned in beamng's 'Welcome to VR' dialog does not work for you is, in essence, simply trying to get you to start the game while the VR audio device has already been selected as the default Windows audio device. Do whatever you can to make that happen, and audio will work correctly in BeamNG.

Thank you both, this is really valuable information. I'm working on a potential fix, I will contact you via PM so you can test a possible fix for me (as I don't have access to a Varjo device to test it myself).

    I'll try this!

I have an HP Reverb G2 v2 available as well, and that works fine with sound inside the headset and sending audio to the desktop.

For now, would it be possible to make the Valve Index have a special checkbox override in the options menu for audio? (With a warning that it would kill custom mod audio).

I wonder if there should be a VRAM check button that simply reports if your videocard has enough VRAM to run VR appropriately?

@stenyak thank you so much for your support and helping to make this work!

I'm afraid that's not practical. No matter what warnings we put, some people will not read, and we'll increase our workload (in support, maintenance of twice the code, etc). So best to just fix it properly, hope we can manage that soon but no promises (it might be a bug with our external audio library, in which case we would be waiting for an external company to fix it).

This is also not practical to do, the amount "enough VRAM" very heavily depends not only on how *you* use the game, but on how you use the rest of computer. Amount of traffic, which mods you use, do you use steamvr or other runtime, do you keep a browser open in the background, is the VRAM in your gpu working at reliably consistent speeds or not, etc. We prefer to just reduce the amount of necessary VRAM on our side as much as possible, which we're working towards, with some luck this kind of improvements might arrive in the next year or two.

You're welcome, thank you too for reporting issues :)

Hello, I'm having the issue that when im in vr, inside the car in first person view, i can't center the camera using the centering buttons, it's always too to the left or the right, but too hard to center, it seems to be a point in the center where the camera "jumps" and goes too much to the left or to much to the right, is there a way to fix this? I've already seen people having this issue in the forum but no solutions, thanks.
