I am trying to play BeamNG but it us unplayable because of the lag, I made all the settings very low but its still just as laggy, but other games such as battlefield 4 work, and have 60+ fps

    my specs are:
    Intel Core i7 4710HQ (2.50GHz)
    16GB Memory 1TB HDD
    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB
    1920 x 1080
    Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Going out on a limb here and going to say the CPU doesn't have the singlethreaded punch required for the game, nor will you have much luck finding said punch in a mobile formfactor.

With that said, ensure your power consumption mode is set to performance and not balanced or power-saver. Your laptop is fairly new so dust shouldn't be a problem, but it may be advisable to replace the TIM with a better variety so it doesn't hit thermal thresholds as quickly.

60FPS is incredibly hard to hit in this game, under optimal conditions I'd expect that laptop to pull about 40.

Did you also turn off SSAO? That can cause a lot of lag as well.

My desktop pc is less powerful (i7-950 @ 3HZ) then this laptop and it runs it around 30-40FPS so i was expecting that area, I think im getting 10ish or less.

yes i did that did not change anything.

Actually, even if you turn off all postFX it can still be on. Manually uncheck them all. Also try turning off UI with Shift+U.

I'm pretty sure there is a separate problem aside from the game settings as changing them does nothing for my performance. I have everything on the lowest possible setting and its still really lagging.

Then your cpu is causing the lag if changing graphics settings does nothing, press ctrl+f and view your fps, then press the j key and watch fps, if it shoots up your cpu is causing problems, if It stays the same then your gpu may be overheating and throttling or if you have Nvidia optimus it might be running beamng on the intel graphics, in Nvidia control panel tell it to run beamng with the nvidia card

If that doesnt fix it then I have no idea whats up

Personally I think you might try messing about with it, it shouldn't be as bad as you make it out to be (maybe try re-installing it?)

Many laptops (particularly gaming ones) under clock when on battery. Plug into the mains and ensure the power plan settings are on high performance not low or balanced.

No problems on a comparable set up (870M 3GB). Sounds to me like system issues that logoster mentioned. My machine runs HOT AS HELL on Beam....no shit I keep my
coffee warm with the fan exhaust. I'll take a stab and say system throttling of some sort. No way 11FPS on lowest settings is a GPU/CPU issue on that machine.

I haven't had a laptop for so long i forgot about that, that fixed it, but on high settings its still really laggy, normal works at around 20fps, but at least i can play now.

I have almost the same laptop (750JZ with the 880M). What you are explaining is most likely that you are running the game with your integrated graphics card. When I first ran BeamNG I was also surprised that there were no improvements over my older laptop. 30 fps with all on lowest. Then I got to options and selected the high performance card and it jumped to 150 fps. Go to options and select the Nvidia, or exit the game, right click on the game shortcut and go here: http://i.imgur.com/UdbA7xb.jpg Alternatively go to "Change default graphics processor" and set the Nvidia to be default for the beamng 'exe' file.

Additionally, note the power consumption difference in laptop and desktop CPUs.

A quadcore at 3GHz in a mobile computer will have significantly lower (overall calculation) performance than a similar CPU in a desktop computer. The sheer number transistors vary greatly, even though the core count, frequency, memory controller, PCI controller, model category etc is very similar - A great sales tricks from the hardware giants, as most consumers are not educated on the details of how CPUs work.

About time people get to know this.

Ok so I had the same problem as you had and I found out that it was using the integrated Intel graphics (which sucks balls). So if you are using windows 8 or 8.1 and you have to go into the NVidia control panel and select "Manage 3D settings." After you are in those settings select beamng drive as the game you want to customize. Once you have done that select the preferred graphics processor to be the NVidia GPU and then save those settings, and the game should run good the next time you start it.
