"Do not use profanity, even as a joke." Posting guidelines, buddy. You agreed to them before you posted.

    Now, I found this:

    http://darkscarab.com/resources/tutorials.php?id=43
extremely useful when I was learning how to use Blender. I learned a fair amount of skills in this tutorial, and it's more than enough to get you well on your way. :)

Um, the blender UI isn't the best I've come across. The little experience I have with blender seem to point towards you having to learn keyboard shortcuts. My memory for such things isn't great so I quickly switched to the educational version of 3ds.max for learning. I could recommend that you do the same thing.

Otherwise, as a non user who doesn't do much I can merely recommend these resources

Ok, now that's dealt with, this post script offtopic should offer you a little advice on how to swear here

I think profanity is fine, but we need to keep these forums a nice place to be. Please think of other people when you post. The swearing rule isn't strictly enforced so feel free to use it as a guideline. you know, as always its "bounds of reason". To a good first degree approximation, you cross them when you average more than one swear word in 10 posts. There's not that much insane stupid at this point in the forum. I don't know what you're doing with 6 in a single post. I would go so far as to say that I love profanity, however the very reasons I love it also mean that too much of it isn't very good reading. We're on a written forum, make sure what you write is appealing in some way. What you've used there is childish and unfunny. Swearing is meant to add something to what you say, not replace it. There's a way to swear. Mix your swearing with substance, an advanced vocabulary and be somewhat eloquent. Its for emphasis and effect, those things require that a writer be subtle.

    I love blender.

    Cgboorman's tutorials are great.

    Keyboard shortcuts are the man.

And if your computer can't even run 144p videos I would not suggest 3d modeling.

I literally learned from watching someone extrude a plane, that's basically what I do now.

You don't need to know a lot to get started but modeling certainly is daunting at first.

With Blender you pretty much only need the stuff in the first pic when starting out. You youngsters have it too easy; back in my day we were learning 49b :D (See pic 2)

I remember when I hated 2.5+ because I was stuck on 2.49b, but once I learned the UI a bit better there is no way I'm ever going back. :p

Have you, by chance, ever used sketchup?

Not a great suggestion to be fair. I seldom see attractive models come from Sketchup. You can't really manage the polygons properly, usually meshes end up very messy.

Sketchup is great for no brainers like me, Blender is like trying to guess the meaning of life...

I used to feel the same way, swearing that I would never leave my Sketchup comfort zone for Blender. But then I caved, gave it a shot, and I wonder how I ever did anything in Sketchup. Blender is intimidating at first, but it gets easier as you learn more; not only about the program itself, but the general theory and ideology behind 3D modelling. It's tough at first, but if you keep at it and put the effort in you'll set yourself up for plain sailing later.

The old Blender was a pain, and I felt myself not using it so often, now with the more current and updated UI it's much easier to navigate and do things. At first it is kind of uh.. especially if you've never opened or used it before. I recommend visiting http://blendercookie.com got some really helpful and great tutorials there.

Might be true, but i still feel proud to just being able to make a square in sketchup

I doubt i will be able to learn to use Blender, seeing 4 different cameras is confusing as shit! And i always seems to mess up my work somehow.

btw, why is sketchup such a a bad program? It is easy and good to use and i have not had a single problem with it so far.

You don't need to use multiple cameras if you don't want to. I personally just use one 3D viewport and rotate the camera around.

As for Sketchup's downfalls, my biggest gripe is being unable to only select individual vertices. You can only select faces and edges, and this makes the modelling process rather difficult and ungainly at times. The texturing method is also strange; instead of the regular UV mapping and unwrapping, you place the entire image on each polygon and drag it about/scale it to fit. You have to line up the texture on each individual polygon. This strikes me as very strange and hard to work with, but hey, to each their own.

I also find an overall lack of essential, basic tools. No individual vertex selection, no welding, no smoothing and edge splitting, no loop cut tools, no straightforward UV mapping tools. You can't extrude individual vertices or edges, it can only be faces. The list goes on.

You have to remember that Sketchup is essentially babby's first 3D modelling program, like Microsoft Paint to the Photoshop CS6 that is Blender or 3DSMax. I can 100% guarantee you that things you find a chore in Sketchup would be a simple, quick tap of a button in Blender. If you're really comfortable and happy with Sketchup, then I can't and won't stop you, but as a former Sketchup diehard like yourself I implore you that Blender is well worth putting some effort into.

Hahaha, too funny! That is exactly what I was saying/thinking when I first started using it. Don't worry too much, you do get use too it and it becomes really easy and quick to use, I like it now!
