    Hi BeamNG,
I’ve been playing your game for a long time and I am a huge car enthusiast. One of my favorite things to do is build realistic cars and do realistic things for instants drifting. The one thing I’ve noticed in this game is there’s no feeling that the wheels in the front want to track the ground. If you’re using an Xbox controller or any sort of computer keyboard the wheels will always straighten after you make a correction inside of the drift. In real life the front wheels will countersteer them self due to the friction of the tire between the ground. I was wondering if you were ever planning on implementing some thing like this since it would make the game more realistic driving wise. Hope you are all safe The one thing I’ve noticed in this game is there’s no feeling that the wheels in the front want to track the ground. Take the device with some kind of feedback. How do you suppose THE KEYBOARD can do counter steer feeling?

In real life, you don't drive with a keyboard or a controller..
You should use a wheel setup if you want more realism.

I mean... I get where he's coming from... I guess?

The reason the wheels autocenter is because when you let go of the keys on the keyboard/joystick on you controler, that is signaling to the game that you have steered the wheel back to the center and you want to go straight. It's pretty much as simple as that. Now I'm gonna skip the keyboard bit and focus on the controller as that's what I am most used to...

It sounds to me like you want some sort of NFS style auto countersteering for drifting... is that what your saying? So that you can just move the joystick left or right to tighten or widen the drift, and the computer just balances the rest itself? This has been done in CarX... and rather well to the point that you can competently drift with a cell phone in a game with realistic physics.

But if you don't mind me asking... what's the point... Like... I get a little bit of help for a keyboard as the buttons are just on and off, but the only reason you would really need something like this for a controler is if you were playing with an old PS1 or Super Nintendo controller. Otherwise... I just don't really see the point? This is a simulation game after all...

Granted, it would make the game more accessible to a much wider audience... perhaps it could be something that could be put in? Don't think I would ever use it, but I am sure someone would want it.

What he means is when you are drifting a car the front wheels will track straight even if the back is sideways. if your drifting and let go of the wheel it will track the ground and the direction its going. it doesn't automatically straighten out. you really have to drift a car to feel it better. one example is mudrunner/snowrunner. when you stop steering it keeps tracking and eventual straighten out. its more of an actual car mechanics and its just a better way to simulate driving. especially if it has no power steering. it would act like there's an actual weight to it.

What the OP means in the game the keyboard should apply a force to the steering wheel, not just moving at a predetermined angle/angle per second. This means when the steering key(or axis in case of controller) is released(centered) the steering wheel should rotate to an angle that the sliding angle is zero.
For example, when drifting left at 15 degree sliding angle and the player releases his/her steering key/axis, the game should return the steering to 15 degree right instead of dead center.

it needs to not center its self on its own. if it just kept tracking the front wheels it would make it more realistic for non power steering cars. it would also help with drift so its not to touchy
i will try and find a video of what im talking about.

i found this video that kinda explains it. with the gyro on it acts more like a real car as it self steers with the roll of the car. with out the gyro it just re centers as soon as you stop input, its more choppy and sloppy

Heres another video that shows it working separately.

Are you talking about Beam doing this while your on a controller or a keyboard? Because if your using a wheel, Beam already does calculate all these forces, and therefor... this is exactly what happens due to the geometry of the suspension. Nothing needs to be added because its already there.

I think the link posted above does actually do this for keyboard and controller users, plus there is an in game drift filter that may help things along as well.

Honestly this all gives me ideas that because of how non-direct the keyboard controls to the car are there's a lot of filters, assistances, and ways to make keyboard driving better or worse. Regardless of how clear the OP suggestion is, i dont see why the game couldn't have multiple ways to handle keyboard inputs in the car to let you pick the one you prefer.

You could choose the different filters for the keyboard controls, such as "smooth", "fast", and "direct" (I think that's what it's called). Basically, "smooth" makes the wheels turn slower but well, smoother, "fast" makes the wheels turn noticeably faster but also a bit rougher in movement, and "direct" is basically you-press-arrow-key-and-the-wheels-go-full-lock-instantaneously (least realistic). These options are under the controls menu, iirc.
