They wanted to make it tolerable right from the start but every time they tried to put a stronger engine into it, they were turned down. First, they tried to enlarge the original 1.2 litre engine from the Škoda 1201 (picture below) into a 1.5 litre engine, that was in 1958, 10 years before the production started and only in 1985 did that engine go into production. During the late 60s they tried to push through a 1.5 litre DOHC 84 HP engine designed for a different prototype car (Škoda 720 project, this is a picutre of a 1971 prototype) This prototype had even a different more modern body but both the body and the engine were turned down. Actual prototype of the 1203 with the 720 engine That prototype survived but through the years it's been modifed. During the 70s they tried to get an engine from a Lada into the 1203 (both the 1.2 litre 60 HP and 1.5 litre 75 HP engines were tried I believe) but again to no avail although with the Lada engines there were apparently problems with the noise level in the cabin. Then there is the charismatic and funny wobbly suspension that meant that driving the 1203 fast (if that's even possible in any other case than driving downhill) was, let’s say interesting. Cross wing also isn’t something you’d want to fight.

Weirdly Škodas, depending on the car you’d get, were made in no less than 5 factories: -The main factory in Mladá Boleslav (until early 70s made all the chassis and engines, from 1964 made the rear engine Škodas) -The factory in Vrchlabí (made bodies for the utility versions of the old-school models 1200, 1201, 1202 and made all 1203 until 1973. After that luxury versions of the rear engine Škodas were build here, nowadays they make transmissions for the VW Group) -The Factory in Kvasiny (Several versions of the 1200 and the 1201 were made here, during the late 50s and early 60s Škoda Felicia Roadster was build here after that the Octavia Combi ‘till 1971 and since the 110 R Coupe and its successors Garde and Rapid, nowadays several Škoda models are made there) -BAZ (Bratislavské Automobilové Závody) (Only Škodas made here were the Škoda Garde and early Rapids but for lack of quality their production ended. But many small parts were made there) -TAZ (Trnavské Automobilové Závody) (Here is where the production of the 1203 continued. It started partially taking over from Vrchlabí in 1973 and it took production completely over in 1981, again a lowering in the quality of production was felt.)
Just tried to download the mod and it still works on the 0.22 version. You just have to install wheels and its good to go
I haven't updated the mod yet to include all the new versions and parts. Sorry, it will come soon(ish), I just need to clean up stuff. Don't wanna leave weird experimental debris in the files. I'm also still creating new parts and touching up physics here and there, trying to prevent spiking and stuff. I remember this video someone made of my van on youtube, it was an early version and spiked a lot when crashed...I hope people would use the newer version when making videos but oh well --- Post updated --- Wow dude, you really are into Skodas! I know that making mods is difficult and I think that I couldn´t make any so take your time. I was just reffering to all the people that want to drive this beautifully slow part of Czech communist history and (maybe) don´t know that it´s still driveable.
Nah, It’s never meant in any other way than as a bit darker joke, quite common in Czechia. Typically pointing out the fact that Magyarization in Slovakia was much stronger than Germanization in Czechia. And in a typical Czech fashion it completely jumps over just how much Slovaks suffered under Hungarians.
