Seems this’ll have a lot of configs. Any plans for separating them, perhaps like the Kashira did? It isn’t a huge deal but I reckon it could be a bit cluttered looking.

i'd rather it not clutter up the vehicle menu with 3 separate versions of the same thing.

Different gen = different config. Not like in the Kashira's case where the only difference is the lights, the license plate and the dashboard. That could have easily been a single car but organized like the D-Series, without repeating the same performance with slightly different visuals.

So I bought another Subaru about a week ago, an 04 Outback L. L. Bean (flat 6 EZ30D) for $2700 with 147k miles

Careful with the Boxer 6 cylinder, I heard that they're not as reliable as the EJ's of the same era.

Other way around, ez30d has a timing chain and does not have the head gasket problems of the ej251/2/9. Only thing to worry about on the engine is the idler pully and tensioner. This one just needs new valve cover gaskets. These and the 4eat jatco transmissions paired to them are basically bulletproof (although might swap a 5 speed from an sg forester at the junkyard eventually)

I think you're right. I've also got an Outback (technically my dad's) with the EJ251, and it did have its head gasket replaced a while back. Other than that, these cars are absolutely amazing to drive! Mind you, I also have two other Subarus on the driveway, one with the EJ253, and the other with the FB25B.

Do the manual swap, the autos don't do this engine justice lol

yeah, my 2000 has 121k miles and needs both head gaskets, but they got better after 2002

would you suggest an outback as a first car? maybe a legacy or forester, and the outback sport impreza?
Im looking at cars and subarus are always on my mind because they are punchy and awd with fun handling.
any tips on things i should look out for when searching? i already know about headgasket issues and that the late 90's and early 2000's subarus had serious rust issues on the rear quarter
A baja would be my dream but they're way to expensive in safe shape to be used as a first car or even just a safe car. The cheapest ones ive found in my price range have completely undriveable underbody rot

Yeah, Bajas are usually a bit expensive, with ones around here usually going for $3-4k in good condition and turbos usually in the $5-9k price range. Obviously biased, but Subarus are great first cars, just try to avoid anything with visible rust and/or oil (head gaskets/valve cover gaskets)/coolant (head gaskets)/power steering fluid leaking (often indicates a bad power steering rack or pump that costs a bit to fix). Problems that older Subarus often have are bad wheel bearings and cv joints and axles. Check the bushings to make sure that they are in good condition. Also, make sure the brake lines aren't rusted out or leaking and that the breaks are good. Usually, EJ20s and EZ30s are solid engines, but the older EJ25s (pre-2003) are problematic with head gasket issues as you already know.

quick question, are the units of speed on the dash going to be able to be switched between mph and kph without being exclusively LHD or RHD
for example, I live in the UK and would use a RHD dash and MPH as my unites (I know that setup probably never existed) but idk just a question

    i hope so.

Also, will the baja be a full dif car in the menu or will it be in the outback slot?

Also, i think i asked this already, but will each gen of legacy & outback be in full dif car menu slots? (like the 1st and 2nd gen pessimas.)

All gauge clusters will be available for both LHD and RHD
The Baja will be a body slot in the gen 2 overlander menu slot and each gen will have its own menu slot

    Can you not
It would be WAY more messy with 3827 configs and 373 body styles for 1 vehicle in the selector
