Wont update from v1.5

I tried a few mods that had slidenodes and none worked, I then realized it was because I haven't updated in a while and haven't received the files for the slidenodes to run. I try to run the update and it stops short of a third the way and tells me it can't receive the file: version.txt. The updater.old file doesn't show up until I run the new updater and disappears as soon as I close the updater as well. I built my own computer but I'm not the best when I comes to software. Anyone know the fix?
