I deactived all mods. have settings set to normal. lets say on utah map I go from having 65-80 fps to an instant 7-8 fps happens every few seconds. In the tunnel I go from 140ish fps down to 9 fps every few seconds. acer nitro 5 Laptop Gtx geforce 1050 8gb i5 8th gen. any ideas?

Temps? Laptop plugged in? Do you have an SSD that's filled over 90%?

Temps usually run around 204F=96c. I think. Yes plugged in. No ssd. just hdd and it has 53% available space

    Could be thermal throttling.
The behavior you described is very similar to it.

Sooo I have a cooling pad and the wires burnt up on it awhile back. Well I found a 4.5v wall charger cut the end off and hard wired the fans to it, they are 5 volts a piece. Started the game up and watched the temps they were staying around the 80s to low 90s and it still does the lag thing. I have a few older computers I might take a couple more fans out of them and add to the cooling pad and see if that helps. But one thing I find weird is as soon as I close the game the temps Immediately drop to 60s. is that possible? To me I would think it would need to cool off but to drop 30+ degrees in seconds?

It's quite reasonable for the temperature to drop off very quickly. Rather than monitoring temperature you are better off checking the clock speeds and overall utilisation. CPU can be checked from task manager and something like MSI Afterburner for GPU. Open the game and monitor clock speeds and usage before and during the FPS drop, do they stay constant?

How does the machine perform in other intensive games?

Played GTA5 first time was at 60 fps and would drop to 30-40 fps. Second time it stayed at 51-54 fps and I could drive 100+mph while it was raining and lightning.(in game)

My cpu hovers around 60% during game play but as soon as the lag hits, it drops down to 15%. Now I just need to figure out how to find the gpu thing

Don't check the usage, check the clock speed of your CPU.
Windows shows that in the Task Manager, in the Performance tab:

You can easily tell if it's Thermal Throttling, as the clock speeds would drop the speed to something really low.
That happens because the CPU is reaching too high temperatures. So the CPU is slowing-down to dissipate heat more easily, but that slow-down would cause a performance drop for several second (as long the CPU is running slower), like you described in your first message.

Usually it happens around 90°C, but can vary from CPU model and your settings.
Reasons for Thermal Throttling could be:
    • Clean the dust from your PC, in particular air intakes and outtakes. If air can't circulate, your PC won't be able to cool down effectively
    • Your cooling system isn't effective enough to be able to cool down the machine, you may want to consider moving to aftermarket CPU Coolers which can do the job better than the stock CPU coolers. Sometimes a simple replace of the Thermal Paste (especially if you never did that and you have that since a few years) can help a lot for cheap.
    • If your are overclocking with a cooling system that isn't up to the job, then that's a bad idea.

Clock speed is dropping, goes from about 3.8 GHz down to .78 GHz

I did an under volt thing and it seems to be running a lot better.

oh lord yea it sounds like your thermal throttling. would be worth your time if it dosent void the warrenty to tear down the laptop and do a deep clean and repaste.

I'll have thermal paste on the way soon. Well I say soon but its been in the cart for most of the day as I continue shopping for a bunch little stuff thats not really needed or pc related lol.

Use softwares such as ThrottleStop to force your CPU clock at rated speeds.

Only if it's got thermal throttling, it's not worth burning up a CPU for 70-80 FPS.
My tip to you is since it's throttling so bad is to lower the max frame rate to like 50 FPS, it reduces strain on the CPU by a massive amount and you'll only notice a small difference in framerate, after 60 FPS the human eye can hardly see a difference anyways, which is why it's such a common goal to be able to run a game at. Also, put a fan next to your PC to make sure it's not just sucking in it's exhausted air through it's intakes. Hot air doesn't seem to keep things cool too well for whatever reason, hahaha. On my old case though, it had a STRIX RX570 shoved in it and it used to get grossly hot due to a lack of space and cooling fans. I swapped everything into a mid-tower and have 3, 120mm fans now and have no thermal issues now.

    It's a dangerous suggestion though.
Thermal Throttling is a safety measure, to prevent the CPU from reaching critical temps. It should not be disabled.
Forcing the CPU to run at rated speeds when it's already overheating could/would cause damage on the long run.

It's better to solve the Thermal Throttling problem in first place. A few things:
    • Replace the thermal paste between your CPU and radiator (especially if you haven't done in a while/ever). It's a rather low-risk operation that can help a heap.
    • Clean the dust from your PC, in particular from the air intakes/outtakes. If the dust is blocking those, there will be poor air-flow inside the case, hence poor cooling.
    • Make sure the case is located in a place where air can freely circulate around it
Along with the suggestions in the posts above.

Understood. However I'm curious about the CPU "thermal throttling". On my computer when the CPU is overheating, the clock speed will gradually decrease to maintain a 95°C temp, at around 2.4~2.8GHz, throttling disappeared after i did clean the dust. I didn't notice any computer that I had used to have clock speed jumping between rated to lowest.

Well I replaced the paste with some new thermal paste and cleaned a lot of dust out of the fans and I used intel's program(ETU) and under volted to about -160 and the temps dropped pretty good and the game runs better. I started out at -125 then moved to -150 then to -200 it shut down, backed down to -180 it also shut down, so I tried -170 it worked for awhile but eventually it also shut down, now that I have gone down to -160 seems to be good.''for now''

As someone who got my pc repaired for thermal damage due to faulty fans (thanks acer) what pc do you have? how new is it? if it new get that checked, for more than half a year i thought 95°f temps were normal, i was informed that my pc was running 20°f to hot and my gaming performance suffered because of it.
