So, I'm not building out a completely new machine (already have a GPU I'm happy with) but looking at a new CPU.

Currently running an i7 4770k, so that is my reference point and looking specifically to get better Beam NG performance.

Beam NG seems to be very cleverly coded from an optimization standpoint...this could be a crude oversimplification, but from what I gather each car gets assigned to a CPU core. So, with my current 4 physical/8 virtual core CPU, each car I spawn up to 8 is on a different core. Once I add a 9th car, from here on I will be splitting cores between cars. This is only my current understanding - please correct me if I'm wrong!

Working under this understanding, I'm thinking for Beam NG multi-car performance, more is better in terms of cores. I have identified a couple different AMDs:

    Ryzen 7 2700X:
Budget build, can get for a very good price. 8 physical, 16 virtual. Beats current i7 by a fair margin in overall benchmark score, but actually slightly slower in terms of single-thread performance.

    Ryzen 7 3700X:
Still 8 physical and 16 virtual. Good bit more expensive than 2700X but...really stomps i7 in overall benchmark and outpaces it in single-thread performance.

I guess 2 questions out of this:
    1) is my understanding that i'd really want as many cores as possible for multi-car BeamNG performance correct?
    2) obviously pretty subjective because it's more of a budget question, but would stretching for the 3700x be worth it? I.e. how much better (if any) would you expect the 3700 to run Beam NG relative to the 2700?

    Thank you!

I'd say that for the most part, the choice depends on how many vehicles at once you want to run. I have a R5 2600 & can do 8 vehicles at 40-60fps even on big maps like Italy, so definitely there's not much issue even though the CPU has 6 cores & 12 threads. Obviously, the better the CPU, the better the performance but if you don't want to shell out loads of money, I'd say to go for the 7 2700X unless you want to be doing some other CPU intensive tasks other than BeamNG then go for the 3700X

I'd go with the 3700x, or alternatively the 3600. if you're just looking to spawn in 2-4 more vehicles, the 3600 should be fine. 6c/12t is more than enough for BeamNG, as well as other games. If you really want a Ryzen 7, just get the 3700x with an X570 mobo and you'll be set. It'll be more expensive than a 2700x with x470, but you get more features and future upgrade ability.

The Ryzen 7 3700X is an amazing CPU that does well in almost anything I care to throw at it. I'd highly recommend it. Its like a repeat of the old Athlon 64 days if anyone else here remembers that.
