Me and my friend found a abandoned Volvo 240 Estate on some land neer his house and we are not sure what to do with it. It has been there for at least 15-20 years and is very corroded. No pictures of the actual car yet but this is the sort of state it's in. (imported from here)It does have wheels and a front grill
If its a manual then you could always bump start it Think you'll have a hard time doing that without keys though and it is technically theft.
Yea it belongs to the farmer next door. Were gonna ask him if we can break in. It is a manual and we are gonna try bump start it soon. The thing is it is stuck in mud in a forest/woods so it will be a challenge!
Hardest part will be getting it out of there, there was an ancient ford cab over axle pickup on my farm from the 50's (apparently 50's anyway) and when the farm land was auctioned off it got auctioned off with it, took em ages to get it free from the weeds growing through the engine bay. Battery that old might need a water top up. From there if you can solve how to turn the key to start with no key (some awkward hotwiring) you just need to get the car rolling at a decent pace (somewhere between walking and running) in 2nd gear with the clutch down, lift clutch while holding key in start and give the throttle some welly and it should come to life. Bump started quite a few cars in the last 2 years :/
If you are able to get title in your name do not try to start it immediately with a new battery. Drain the gas tank, the gas is bad and wont ignite, also replace the fuel filter. You should probably drop the oil pan on both the engine and transmission, the oil has been sitting so it ill be chunky and thick. Drain the coolant and replace any cracked hoses and lines. Once you can get it up and running don't drive it hard, it will need to broken in.
Remove PBU master cylinder. Disconnect vacuum hose. Remove soundproofing on left side of center console. Disconnect pressure rod from B pedal. Remove PB unit. Find large hill, snap handbrake lever. Profit???
Well, if you get it out and started I guess it would be a good car to mess around in. Couldn't you just pull it out with another car or a tractor or something? We had a car like that abandoned in the woods behind our backyard (Private property, not really allowed to go in there) and it was just in the middle of a path. Like someone wanted to get rid of it so they drove it out there. Didn't actually look too bad until a tree fell on the front end of it. (I think that's what happened. It's gone now and the last time I saw it was years ago.) EDIT: Please do keep us updated. Maybe a video when you try to start it?
What he said. There's also a solid chance that the engine has seized. You shouldn't attempt to turn her over or bump start it especially on a downhill because once it gets going it may not be able to stop; the brakes may not be functional. Just keep all that in mind. The labour to get it out of the weeds will be the hardest part, getting her to turn over is something else. I would certainly have it towed (flat bed preferably) to a trusted mechanic before you try anything with it. If you're serious about this Volvo then spend the time and money to get her out of the weed and to a garage for inspection. It would be a shame if you tried to bump start it and to have everything come to a grinding mechanical halt or to have it come to an abrupt stop in a ditch or up against a tree or some other solid object like your house or another car. I wouldn't try to merely drag her out of there. Weeds can be very woody. If the corrosion is moderate, any attempt to drag her straight out will result in damage. Cut all the plants around and underneath. You don't have to pull the root structure, just make sure that there isn't any wood that the car will snag on. Good luck, stay safe! It will be fun whether or not she's drivable.
Why in the world would you try and make plans to do something with it then? Get the title in your name, then proceed to ask strangers on the internet what you should do with it.
You're right. It would probably break whatever it is that it crashes into, and then drive off with a grin. Then again, never underestimate chassis rot.
