How to simulate very high traffic without significant lag?

    Hi everyone,

I really love realistic driving in BeamNG. However, cars seem to always spawn far away from me when traffic is on, which I understand. Is there a good way, without killing my PC, to simulate heavy traffic?

    Thanks!

I don't know of any way to change the respawn distance for traffic without going into the game files, which is probably what you're looking to do. That would be nice to see for a place like Belasco, where lines of sight tend to be limited. You could ask a modder/GamerGull if that option is planned or easy to change in the files; I don't mess around with modding so I personally do not know.

On the question of raw number of cars, your CPU core/thread count is going to be what matters most. Turning the graphics settings down a little would help too. Or turn them down a lot if you really want to go crazy. The traffic vehicle number slider in the menu maxes out at 10 I believe, I'm not sure if "auto" will ever attempt more than 10. You could spawn more cars manually and set their AI to traffic via the radial menu though.

As for performance with many cars, stripping the cars down can ease the load on your computer. You can see the devs did this in the Belaso Raceway parkinglot race official scenario as well as in many the community made race scenarios. Disabling collisions in the options menu could help if you're desperate, I'm not sure if that would help on anything other than a low end computer though.

Disabling collision would help out a lot.
This will mean that you will not be able to crash into vehicles though, rather go through them but if your PC is low end then it's at least a way to have traffic :)

my PC isn't necessarily low end, I do have an i5, an rx 460, and 8gb of ram, so would it really even help?

Yes, disabling collisions helps in any case with performance, as you are removing calculations from the physics.
Note that at a certain point, you can start to get GPU bottlenecked, rather than CPU bottlenecked, with so many vehicles. Depends on how your system is balanced.

As a point of reference for that, several versions ago (it may have improved a bit by now) I ran a test to see how many cars I could run at the same time. My GTX 1070 started to run out of steam at around 12 cars (leaving the T Series and Pigeon out of this equation as they are really far of both ends of the normal vehicle computer requirements scale). My CPU's are way overkill for the game so they were only using about 15 to 20% so the definit bottleneck would have been my GPU... do with that information what you will...
