I have to always add material and texture manually, but the uv maps should be imported together with the model. I have no idea what's the issue on your side. Do you have latest version of Blender or did you try reinstalling it?
2.78a, I have newer ones, but that I like as it never has had a crash (except when I did attempt to import 16K terrain). It is so long I did work on those, that I can't remember so sure, it is perfectly possible I remember uv map part wrong, what I remember is that there was quite bit of tedious work to get materials work.
