At the moment im running a i5 3470 CPU @ 3.20 GHz and sometimes whilst running the game (especially when playing maps with lots of foliage and trees) my fps drops to like 15, also when looking at my cpu usage it peaks at about 98%. (every setting on normal in game)

    Rough specs.
think my ram is okay: 8GB
and so is my GPU: GTX 650 (could be better but think its okay for running BeamNG)
4 fans in the system all together. :)

is there any other way of getting around this problem without dramatically decreasing graphical settings?could this be a slacking GPU?bottle necking? i dont wanna waste 100s pounds a CPU when it might not be the problem.

The 3450 should play the game fine. OTOH, the 650 is weaker than my 7770, and it played normals with 50 fps.

Step 1; Open ctrl+f, then j. If the FPS goes up by more than a bit, it's the cpu. If not much changes, it's the GPU.
    Step 2; Scan for viruses.
Step 3; Make sure postFX is off.

    That's all I got.

Hit J while the game is running to pause the physics, see if the FPS shoots up or not. If so then you are being CPU bottlenecked, otherwise GPU bottlenecked.
Although I wouldnt have thought you would get major issues on that CPU considering I run the game fine on a 3.4ghz AMD Athlon II I bought 2 years ago (and it wasnt cutting edge then)

You might be able to squeeze an overclock into the system. You arent running one of the unlocked models though so your overclocking options are limited.

Sounds like you GPU is bottle necking here. I know people that have the 650 and have heard tales about its performance. It is not a particularly powerful card and doesn't have the raw power of some of the higher end cards. Even my GTX670 has some trouble with dense foliage on some maps. I run an older i5, a 2400, and I think the performance is fine with 1-3 cars in BeamNG so I guess its not that.

    GPU bottleneck, no doubt.

Make sure the postfx are all off and you may want to lower the lighting quality option. Then get a new GPU. (GTX 750ti or 660-670 maybe?)

thanks everyone (couldnt figure out how to reply to more than one person at once) just paused the physics and the fps went up by only one? but stayed virtually the same. if were talking a new nvidia GPU, which one would be the most suitable and good value?

The 650ti boost is a minor upgrade, but it will make it playable. A good upgrade would be a 670, 750ti, 760, 265, 270 non-x. To max the game you need better than a GTX 770 on the nVidia side, and better than a 280x/7950 on the AMD side. However, they are overpriced. Go for a 760/770/650ti boost IMO.

I'd say that depending on your budget, a 750ti would be a good fit. It has a little lower TDP than your current card (the power draw will be a smidge less) and has about twice the performance of your current card. Of course, if you have a bit more than £110/$150 to spend on a GPU, moving up to a 760 (Same as the older 670 but cheaper) or a 770 would be a better option.

Firstly, thats the polar opposite of the truth, windows 8 is much quicker than 7 and improves its managing of thread priorities too, end result: game boosting rather than killing.
Secondly. Please kindly point out where the OP said they were using windows 8.

You should consider buying an used card, I got a 580 for about 100 bucks and it'll max out almost everything.

But like Davidbc said, get the best one you can. If you can afford something better, then get it.

A newi5 will even put a sli 780ti setup to good use. Pretty much whatever you can get. A GTX 770 balances well with the 4670k at stock.
