Very interesting mod, I wonder what the advantages of this were in real life. I would think that you would want at least four, especially for a car like that, to get good power and efficiency. Were automatics just that bad/unreliable to the point where they didn't want to put in more gears than necessary in the fifties?
2 speed autos where pretty common in the US in the 50s, and even into the late 60s. They were inefficient and sluggish, but more reliable, and the oversized V8s of the time had enough torque to push through the low ratios and slushy torque converters. The dynaflow is actually better than a two speed though, it used multiple stators and turbines that functioned effectively as multiple torque converters in sequence. It was a lot like a CVT, except tons less efficient. It was also dampened the engine output really well, so well in fact that the manual "kickdown" function was added, as simulated by the range box in this mod, to give it a bit more torque for passing.
Yeah reliability was a factor, but cost was too! Automatics were expensive when they came out, and especially due to it being post war, people didn't have money to spend on superfluous automatics. They wanted something that worked. And having this was cheap. They also had the advantage of being smooth, early automatic transmissions didn't shift with the silkiness we take for granted today, they were a bit lumpy. This with a single gear was described to accelerate like an aircraft, very smooth.

Personally, I love this mod, the silky smooth power makes it absolutely period correct, however, I have come to a problem. After unspecific high speed conditions, the torque converter doesn't want to "kick back down" to full torque multiplication after sustained high speed driving. Thus necessitating the resetting of the vehicle. Making accelerating out of corners extremely sluggish. If you are wondering who races a Burnside? Me. Why? Its fun.
Just to clarify we are speaking about the "2 SPEED POWER GLIDE" and yes, My buddys 62 impala and also his el camino averaged about 500hp for the impala and the el camino was pushing about 700, My point is, that the 2 speed absolutely was garbage but in its day it was the way to go considering our speed limits were roughly 50mph at most and 55 for highways lol. But yea.. very inefficient indeed. P.S the first 2 speed produced had a really tall first gear "50mph redlining" sooo just it actually sounded alot alike what CVT in today's transmissions feel like now lol. minus the shifting!
This mod is awesome! I just discovered this game, was amazed they included an early 50s GM type car in it and now I find this! I have a 1951 Buick Special with the straight 8 and dyna-flow transmission in real life, so it will be interesting to see how this works in the game in comparison.
hey dude, i know you're new but what you did there was what's normally called a "bump", when you type a message in a thread that's over a few months old. it's generally preferred that you could write a review or contact the author directly to tell them that you like their mod, as posting in an old thread brings it back to the front of the forums and can make some people annoyed. other than that, welcome to the forums, hope you have fun
it's alright, and i haven't abandoned the mod, i've ported it to the autobello, (obviously changed torque converter to make up for significantly lower torque) just need to add some presets and then upload it.
the pigeon has so low power that it doesn't make sense, my turbo diesel mod has it though, except the transmission is a 4-speed automatic (not a copy and paste job from the gavril, it's custom).. The pigeon is supposed to be a utility vehicle that can tow large loads for the engine size, so sticking a dynaflow, which has quite frankly terrible standing start performance, would be rather silly
