It's just a reflection on post-WWII society. In the 60s, the "Swinging Sixties" trends moved the role models from haute couture aristocrats to swinging rockstar jet-setters, and the luxury cars followed suit. The overstyled Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud/Bentley S2 turned into the Silver Shadow/T2, which looked like what a big MG would look like. Jaguar and Rover turned their bulbous shapes of the Mark IX and P4 into the sleek, low-slung XJ and P6. The Mercedes 300, a high-roofed majestic cruiser, turned into the relatively low-roofed, high-tech 600. Lincoln replaced their overstyled late 50s cars with the simpler Continental, and then introduced a fastback coupe, the Mark III, as its flagship. A similar thing happened to Cadillacs losing their tailfins and turning into slabs, with the Eldorado even getting a new FWD platform. The Imperial turned from a staid luxury sedan into a fuselage-styled sedan and fastback. Japanese luxury sedans abandoned their plain boxy shapes and became sporty coke-bottle machines.
Damn, that's a lot of inspiration for cars like the Cedric. Also, I'm gonna say that they messed up with the last Cedric, the Y34 Compare this to the Y33, and you see an big decrease in charm.
It's also part of a trend - one of replacing the simple boxy/curvy designs of the 90s with more daring forms for the 21st century.
Well, it doesn't look "daring", as much as it looks "ragged". I honestly don't know if this is their first botch up with this trend, although this is one of their worse if so.
It doesn't have much of the appeal the 3rd gen had, and looks more like an Ford competitor to the Chevelle or Camaro.
I think if we're comparing a 5th gen gts we should at least get a pic of a gts 6th gen and not a four door
I've changed my mind on this one. A friend of mine actually has a new 2018 Sienna, and comparing it next to my own 2013 Sienna, the facelift isn't that bad. It looks a lot better in person than in photos.
Disagree. I saw one before, looks refreshing than the "boring" pre-facelift. OT: The Commodore went from a true Aussie sedan... To an Insignia. The new Holden ZB "Commodore" shouldn't use the Commodore namesake, it should be an Insignia. Sorry.
Historically, Commodores were always rebadged or mildly reworked big Opels. VF was the exception, not the rule.
I'd prefer more tame designs (with the exception for a few, like the 2018 Camry.) than raging designs.
