Volkswagen Beetle Mod feat. Herbie The Love Bug - the only mod where bugs are features - Authors: @MrX13415 & @VertexStyle [ last updated: 26/10/2026 ] Note by the original author, @VertexStyle: The legacy of this mod has been picked up by @MrX13415, who took what I started and turned it into something truly remarkable. Recently refined details and the polished finish are his work. He completely overhauled the JBeams, lua files, materials, optimized high-poly meshes for better in-game performance and keeps the mod up to date. Huge props to him for his great work. It's been a pleasure to watch it evolve, and I am very proud of what this project has become through our collaboration. I will keep contributing where I can - these days more in a supporting role, but my passion for this project isn't going anywhere. ~VertexStyle P R O M O - V I D E O S Spoiler: Legacy Promo Videos H I G H L I G H T S ⬩ D E T A I L E D - C H A S S I S 3D models, engine, suspension models and driving behavior have been fully refurbished and are more realistic. Currently, the bug features a late-model IRS suspension. Eventually, we plan on adding the iconic swing axle. ⬩ F O L D I N G - R A G T O P To our knowledge, this is the first mod in the game that features a fully functional sliding ragtop. BeamNG is fantastic with soft body physics of hard materials like metal. But let's face it, mesh deformations of fabric is where it's at! ⬩ R A D I O The mod features a fully functional retro style radio. You can add your own music to the radio: Navigate to the following folder: [ICODE]%localappdata%\BeamNG.drive\0.34\settings\vehicles[/ICODE] Create a folder "bug" with a folder "radio" in it, i.e. [ICODE]bug\radio\[/ICODE]. For each radio station, create a subfolder with the following format: [ICODE]<Frequency> <Name>[/ICODE] Frequency is a number between 87.5 and 108.0 (MHz). The decimal place must always be included. From one station to the next, a gap of at least 0.3 MHz must be present. Folders with the same or a too close frequency to another folder are always the same radio station. Name is an arbitrary label for the radio station. Tracks are played in random order. To play the tracks in order, add a [ICODE]=[/ICODE] to the name of the station folder, right after the frequency, i.e. [ICODE]91.0= K-DST[/ICODE] Place your favorite music files in the created folders. Note that only MP3, WAV, OGG, OPUS and FLAC files are supported. Press CTRL+R to reload the vehicle to load the new radio station. (Restarting the game also works.) Example: Code: bug\radio\ 88.3= TheFolder 97.5 Beats.FM 105.0 Amazon Music ⭐ H E R B I E - F E A T U R E S ⭐ ~ Jim Douglas ⬩ D Y N A M I C - H O R S E P O W E R Herbie is a car with feelings and will only go fast if he likes you. Show him that he can trust your driving behavior. He likes lots of driving and especially drifting and jumping. He hates getting crashed. Herbie will not forget. ⬩ F L O A T I N G -&- S W I M M I N G - I N - W A T E R Herbie came in contact with water in The Love Bug, Herbie Rides Again, Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo and Herbie Goes Bananas. This feature is a must have! Swim with keys [T] [F] [G] [H]. Note that the feature doesn't work properly in small water basins (e.g. on grid map). ⬩ S H A P E - R E G E N E R A T I O N Herbie is alive. Small dents will immediately get repaired. What's broken is broken. Inspired by the Disney movie "Major Effects" featuring Herbie. ⬩ W H E E L I E Herbie can pop a wheelie even if rpm-torque ratios don't allow it. You are so getting banned. :\ I've been waiting for a VW Beetle/Type 1 in BeamNG for quite a while now. And what better way to enjoy one than with good ol' Herbie?
You are so getting beaned :| On topic: Yes! I've been waiting for a VW Type 1 in BeamNG! (hence my profile pic, but mine is 1973 though )
He is talking about jbeam. Jbeam is how the car deforms, performs, ect. You can see the skeleton by pressing CTRL and B.
Everyone chill out and let the moderators do the job of deciding what's right and wrong for the forum. Report posts that you don't like and move on. You're just creating more work for them, and they don't like it. Ahem, anyway, if this mod is 100% original, this will be a wonderful addition to the game's assortment of available mods. I will have to try it later, but it looks good Can you bring up the JBeam debug visualizer and show us a picture of the JBeam in game?
Right now a big thing that takes away from the overall quality is the lack of accurate deformation. The first video alone shows that this is way stronger than it should be, you should consider asking someone for help with JBeam and optimization because that's probably the biggest thing that needs improvement right now.
@Driv3r1142 the model is done by me. However the jbeam files are based on a ingame car, as I've never done a beamNG mod before haha.
The Jbeam has been edited, though. Apparently you have done Jbeam a mod. It still doesn't deform correctly, though. As opkraut said, it's too strong. There are also weird spikes. Not to mention that the radiator overheats ridiculously fast.
@Driv3r1142 @opkraut Deformation feels ok, and could be sure better. The video doesn't even show any deformation anyways? You guys have kinda hard needs. I made the model mainly for animation, and just imported it to beamNG cause why not do it? So its pretty obvious that the jbeam file needs a lot of tweaking. If some of you guys are willing to help me out for that, that would be perfect, as I don't have the time for that
What I meant was when it drives off the cliff in the video and doesn't take any damage. That's extremely unrealistic and is a good indicator that the deformation needs work
According to these posts, it will come. That's not how I saw it. It looked to me like he expertly drove it down without crashing it. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be able to do that, and if I did get it down, it'd be all mangled up.
