How do I win a egg dropping contest?

Doing a activity where if you win an egg dropping contest you win money. I don’t know the amount.

Any ideas on how to win first?

 

put the egg in string bondage and attach as many balloons as you can to the string, in a spherical manner
they don't even have to be helium filled
flawless victory
let's split the winnings 80/20 me/you

 

What are the rules of the contest for how your egg contraption should be made?

^ what I did, got 1st place 4 years in a row (then some rich kid bought an RC helicopter to take it down for him :|)

Put the egg in the middle of a box that’s completely filled with flour.

 

That theoretically shouldn't work, as the flour will pack into a smaller space on impact (or if you already pack it tight), making it like hitting the ground itself. I could be wrong, though.

 

It quite possibly won’t work. I haven’t actually tried it myself, I’ve just heard several people say it works.

Regardless, the basics are always the same.

Minimize the force/potential energy to have the egg survive.

Build something with a lot of air resistance to minimize the velocity and something big and puffy to spread the force out over time. Having something light and with its weight low will also help, but spreading the impact out over time is most important.

For reference, the equations are below:

(Potential energy) = (mass)(acceleration due to gravity)(height)

(Force)(duration of impact) = (mass)(change in velocity)

Also, pressure = (mass* acceleration due to gravity)/area. This equation is mostly here as a reminder to not have the egg sitting on a small point which would compromise the structure upon any applied force.

Or just buy a quad copter. They aren't expensive and are more stable than RC helicopters. An outdated or lazy set of rules will allow them.

*Story time* Back in AP Physics 1 after the AP test my teacher held 2 contests, the best 3 in each contest got extra credit. The first one was to build a paper airplane for distance. This one was done individually, I got second or third. The second was to build a tower out of pasta and stale marshmallows which is both tall and can hold a lot of weight. My team went for the short but strong approach and our tower took an absurd amount of weight. That one we got first.

Using flour is like having a car airbag filled with, well, flour. You need something to spread the impact out, flour is too compact to do that well enough. Think of a shipping companies packing peanuts, their job is to protect a fragile item during the tribulations of shipping, just like the egg drop contest. Packing peanuts have to be light and not dense.

 

For you people asking for the rules:

Not much, you can’t use drones, (I don’t know what they would be useful for.) and you can use anything else, balloons, straws, jars of foam, etc.

Peanut butter is a terrible thing to use anyway. A box with foam peanuts is good enough for the shipping companies, you don't have to over think this.

As for the use of a quad copter: Some rule sets say something like "no one touch it after you drop it", in which case it is legal to tie it to a quadcopter and fly it down instead of dropping it.

I'm now debating between these 2:

Straws, Jar with foam inside

 

Jar? Plastic I assume. The shock absorption wouldn't be much unless it was a big jar.
Though I'm no physicist.

 

What would be the point of the jar, just to hold the foam? Glass is hard and just going to shatter and it won't help the impulse; seems like a really bad idea. Coule use a cardboard box or something like that I nstead of a glass jar.
