Anyone who has played the Doom WAD called UAC Military Nightmare will know that Magus' theme from Chrono Trigger...

...is not the same without the repeated shouting of "This is pure unadulterated cardboard!", "SHAAAADAAAAAAAAAP" and "Spam spam spam spam spammy spaaaaam," not to mention the sound of Santa firing his BFG into Doomguy's ass.

Do stupid things, win stupid prizes.

And Private Messages, as the name says, are private :|
Then if we start to get a worrying amount of reports, we will check. But until then it's strictly private.
Again, it means that we cannot go randomly reading whatever you write privately to another user.

Yet, what you do via them still falls within the terms of usage of the site. So if think you are OK to do stupid/dumb things there, you are wrong.

Alright, just hit the 5 newest posts.
    ProbablySpam.jpg
At least 3 of them were helping people, 1 was constructive, and the last was just spam to get that 5th spot (the original text before this)

Going on a one week vacation with no electronics tomorrow around 2, so I will be taking a short break from the BeamNG forums until either late Friday or early Saturday. Don't fall apart, and catch me up when I get back :)

UV mapping is making me want to cry. I am struggling to comprehend how I am supposed to process this much data when trying to put them together. Especially in figuring out which materials apply to which polygons in an object to figure out which texture they need to map onto. While also trying to create normal maps at the same time.

I don't think I have ever had less fun in Blender than I am currently having right now. This is insanity. I want to scream.

You'll notice in the credits of any given industry-production animated film, the credits list modellers, material artists, texture artists, riggers, lighting directors... no single department is responsible for the UVs of every model*. I like to think that saves money on mental health insurance.

    *I think this is true.

Yeah, it sucks, I was hoping it would be more like tetris:p
My word of advice though, I think with mapping it would be better for your sanity if you took things in small steps. Keep in mind I'm just a beginner, and I don't really care for doing things properly with UV;) Please take with lots of salt!

The first thing you want to do is decide what texture you want to map everything to. At this point, the material is irrelevant, especially with BeamNG where you can adjust reflective/specular properties with purely the textures. Some older games e.g Flatout 2 didn't have fancy maps, so if you wanted a shiny body and matte interior, they would need to be different materials. In BeamNG however, you could technically make a car using only one material (sans lights) and use the specular/alpha textures to counter it. Notice that BeamNG's cars fit the entire body, underside and interior into one texture, most other games would use about 3-4 textures. For my cars, I intend to use a texture for the body, underside/suspension, interior, engine, interior and windows.

Once you have decided your texture, you can begin mapping all of the relevant parts to that texture. At this stage I wouldn't worry about normal maps yet, your main priorities should be properly unwrapping all the parts, and most importantly allocating the right amount of space to your UVs. In this sense it's like tetris, you want to minimise wasted space so you have to try and fit everything as close as possible. You also need to think about what parts are going to be more visible (and allocate them more texture space) and what parts will be less visible (you can allocate them less texture space). A lot of this just comes down to personal judgement/trial and error. It's a good idea to make quick test maps to get a feel of how everything looks/see what needs fixing before you make your final textures.

Once and only once you are totally happy with the UV maps, you can go on to create the final textures. The last thing you want is to have to bin a perfectly good texture just cause the UVs are whack:p

Another thing with UV mapping, the better the UV map, the easier texturing is. I know this from personal experience and having to deal with a garbage UV map :p
