I'm sticking with 8.0 right this minute. I can get a free windows 8.1 install DVD from uni so I might do that and run it in virtual box, I was perfectly happy without a start menu and having the windows key on the keyboard go to the start screen instead so I'll probably play with it in virtualbox and see can I have it running the way I like before updating either of my systems to full 8.1

I never said you didn't. I said I was happy with 8.0 and didn't want to update my systems to 8.1

I've been debating if I should update or not, been reading some reviews and such, people say that it kinda restores your computer, changes your default browser etc. So anybody here think I should make the upgrade?

    Tile UI.

Just be aware that some folks have had issues with updating to 8.1. The cause appears to stem from not having updated 8.0 to the latest fixes.

I just did the full Update for Win8 and am now downloading Win8.1... if all goes as planned, hopefully it should work, however I am on a MacBook Pro... and I know that Win8 had some serious issues with it when the developer preview first was released... I hope this will work a bit better than that did!

Once I finish my exams next month I'll just make a fresh installation of 8.1 instead of updating.

They did improve the start screen too (it hasn't been called metro since they first publically unveiled windows 8, turned out immediately after they unveiled it some other software company filed a trademark case against microsoft and they had to drop the name). There are more tile sizes and new options for snapping apps to the side of the screen (2 extra sizes I think). There are also new features in the WinRT API for apps to use which means in future better apps (bare bluetooth and USB access are both in now I think which is something I am looking forward to), infact the official facebook app uses WinRT8.1 features.
WinRT != Windows RT. Stupid microsoft naming.

I personally just really dont miss the start button at all, I now prefer its absense. I'll get 8.1 running in virtualbox first and then see if there is a way to turn off the bloody thing or at least preserve windows key = start screen instead of windows key = start menu. They better not have gotten rid of Windows key + X either, I use that one too.

you do realize its just a button, it still just leads to the new start SCREEN, and yes, all shortcuts still work, so windows key + x, windows key = Start Screen and so on, they didnt actually re-add the start MENU, just the start BUTTON

They have it at my uni too on some of the library machines, full menu, when I asked the tech guy what software they were using to add a start menu back in he replied "just bog standard windows 8.1, no mods".
