You say it as a joke, I say pessimism and ESP are functionally indistinguishable sometimes. I mean, if you're gonna put a tiny engine like that in our cars, at least make it rev to like 15K or something! It might not be cheap, or practical, or reliable, but at least it'll be kind of fun.

I suppose there are some I4s that do sound decent - but they tend to be the high-performance variants Get one of those up near the five-digit range and it becomes fairly good. Maybe that's the secret. Instead of having a 2.0L turbo, that Malibu should have a 2.0L NA with a Joker-laugh-inducing redline. Sure, no one really needs 9500 RPM for a trip the grocery store, but if a car is designed only for road muggles, then it's half the car it could be at best.

Am I the only one here who's half siding with VW in the Dieselgate thing? The stricter emissions and fuel economy laws, and the people who push them, are flatly insane. 36 MPG fleet average is bad enough, but when it hits 54 MPG fleet average, or whatever it's going to be, that is going to be thoroughly painful. The tree worshippers and their allies in government seem to really believe that all they have to do is make it a "law" (except not really, but I'm not going to get into that right now) and reality will bend itself to their will.

You'll really hate me then. I honestly find the rumble of a v8 to be against my taste and prefer the i4 growl

I would rather have the sound of a H4 than an i4. (And Boosted)

To each his own I guess. To be honest, the 2.3l Mustang is the first one since 1969 I would even remotely consider getting. I would assume their rationale for choosing the 2.3 instead of the 2.7 is that it would cause problems overseas.

How is it even possible to not like the sound of a cross-crank V8? I honestly can't think of many engines that sound more powerful, even when they're not, than the good old V8.

Flat fours can go either way - with UEL headers, they may be even worse than I4s, but still better, in a weird way. Especially when straight piped. A straight pipe UEL header H4 can sound OK, or it can sound like it's on its last dying legs, probably the latter if it's a low-tuned model that can't rev.

I really like this video. Captures the essence of the crown vic well.

It's 10 years old though. That's weird and makes me kinda sad. I bet it'll be weird looking through my old youtube videos in 10 years.

I just figured out that a electric car emits 96 gramms of co2 when it drives with normal energy from the soccet here in germany. So a electric car isnt that good in the only thing its supposed to be good.

Nope, I am also siding with VW, and yeah 36 mpg fleet average just sounds insane already, I couldn't even imagine what 54 MPG fleet average would end up being... All I can think of is cars so small that they make the VW bug look as big as a 70s land yacht, and when you combine having to have insanely good gasmiliage AND low emissions(two things that do not really go together in the first place) then that is going to make it all even worse, I cant help the feeling that its a forced push to move to electric cars which I can only see causing problems... no more long trips without rest because you'll have to sit around for hours at a time waiting for your car to recharge, power goes out(which I could see being a common thing when electric cars become what the majority of people use) while your car needs to charge? well I guess you aren't going to be able to go to work in the morning...and in an additional effort to force them there will probably be tax payer funded "free" recharging stations so even if you aren't driving an electric car you're paying for everyone else who does. And as a final slap in the face there will also probably be tighter laws regarding power plants which will cause even more problems, and the more common solar and wind turbines become the less space there will be for rural towns to be established and expanded and so with a growing population that would mean that more and more people will have to live in cramped cities that will probably have their OWN even stricter emission laws...

I don't mind cars getting smaller displacement but boosted (playing with turbo lag is fun) but I'll also always love a large displacement v8s. Their rumble and torque even when you're barely pushing at 2k rpm is intoxicating.

Inline anything forever. if it has more than one cylinder head, it's crap.

the crown vic is an amazing car, and I like it a lot, but out of the fullsize cop cars, I kind of like the 91-96 caprice more.

Anything over six is a waste so I don't want a 12 cylinder anything. The k24 and the 2jz show that na or boosted, you can make v8 power and have v8 speed without the v. you can like whatever you want I'm just telling you there is elegance in small simple packaging. stump jumping jethro can pull stumps all day I'm good.

It's strange to me how it seems like most people outside of the US, and some within it, seem to think that any V8 sounds like any other V8.

They've simply never driven (or heard) a Ferrari and witnessed the dual inline 4 flat plane goodness. they couldn't sound more different to me. v8s usually unlike Harley Davidsons still sound great to me.

Yeah, Ferrari V8 engines don't have deep throaty sounds such as a V8 from a Charger yet I still like the sounds of both types of V8's .

This is due to the Flat-plane crankshaft found in Ferrari's

But the difference is the engine has less inertia and the engine weighs less.

I'll just sit here and preach V6 master race. It's the only engine configuration I prefer over a V8. I think they sound amazing, they're endlessly tunable, they last longer than 4's, but are lighter than 8's (unless your GM... fucking GM). They're more efficient than 8's (unless it's made by GM and features pushrods). They're generally more powerful than I4's (unless it's made by GM and features pushrods).

I've owned I4's, I've grown up around V8's. I was taught that owning anything with less than 8 cylinder made you a Pussy, but then I got into the JDM scene and learned the ways of the Inline 6. While I love the I6 and would take it over a 4 anyday, I prefer the unbalanced, shaky, rumbly nature of a cross-plane V6.

But my love for a Ford V8 will never die, especially the Modular stuff.

The V6 is a great engine configuration as it can fit in almost all engine bays and it's mostly found in FWD vehicles.

I would prefer an i6 (turbocharged or not) in RWD configurations and a V6 in FWD configurations.

Look at Toyota's V6 engines. The power throws you back in your seat and offers decent mpg's and has the potential to last over 200k easily.

V6 engines aren't the same they were 30 years ago and have improved a lot since then.
