On the topic of plastic engine covers.
My general assumption is that most customers like products to appear sleek and complete. In the same sense that in many mainstream computers the components are hidden away in the computer case never to be seen by the user. So if they hide all of the nitty gritty from the consumers all they get to see is a neat bit of plastic hiding the "mess" below, rather than seeing something that doesn't invoke confidence.
Also the plastic covers hide all of the complex bits thus making it easier to find where the dip stick and reservoirs are, which would make the "user serviceable" type maintenance easier.

On a personal note though I am not all that fond of them either.

In other words, smooth shiny stuff looks better-built and more professional. I sort of get that, but on the other hand, it just somehow doesn't look as good as traditional valve covers, which also leave the air cleaner and intake manifold uncovered (which is good, at least on cars where those look cool).

The Chevette. Chevy said, "Let's make the AMC Pacer 500 times worse!" That was how it was made.

pacer is worse than the chevette. plus, general motors and American motors were 2 different companies.

The Chevette may not be conventionally beautiful, but it's better-looking than the Pacer. It was also RWD with a rather capacious engine bay, allowing those mechanically inclined to camouflage its appearance by going fast enough that no one can tell what it is.

I'd say that the Pacer is the better car, but you can do less fun things with them.

I don't like the looks of either car, but the pacer looks worse. the chevette in my mind just looks boring.

The Lamborghini Veneno doesn't look too ugly. Neither the Suburu or the Sonata. Actually, if you look at all the cars a little bit, except for the Egoista, they actually look not bad.

Admittedly the plastic covers help with noise insulation which is a big plus in the modern car market.

i know , but it looks like a hotwheels car.

i mean , i could compare it to this thing (even the glass color is the same) :

even though it is a concept car , it doesn't have to look like this.
