Hello people of the internet. Wouldn't it bee cool if beam.ng was on linux. Linux is becoming a bigger gaming platform and it world be cool to have beam.ng i know its highly unlikely but it would be cool.
The vast majority of gamers use Windows. It'd make no sense for the devs to take the time to move it over to Linus or OSX or anything like that.
You can only run version 0.4.0.6 or lower on Wine, because all versions after that use DX11, which is not yet supported by Wine.
Firstly, its free. Secondly, very highly customisable to each individual persons need, some of us love that Thirdly, frees you from the corporations like apple and microsoft that seek to restrict what you can do on your PC. You dont get linux force upgrading you to windows 10, or force upgrading anything for that matter. A fourth one that many will tote but is not true in all circumstances. Lightweight. It can be much smoother and faster than windows. Though this largely depends on which distribution you use (Linux is not just one OS, but many different largely compatible ones based on the Linux kernel that we then call a distribution). I for example use crunchbang++, I currently have 17.9gb used, this is with steam installed, civ 5 + DLC's installed, a few other smaller games, chrome, favourite text editor, some packages to allow me to develop software in golang. The same on windows would probably be closer to 40/50gb used. With 4 chrome tabs open, I am currently sat at 746mb RAM used and processor hasnt hit more than 20% used with videos going, its liking to sit under 10%. Very lightweight and fast distro but not the most user friendly to some, but I very much like it. Ubuntu is probably the most popular distro, that has insane resource usage and in many cases is more demanding than windows is, if you want to use Ubuntu I recommend Xubuntu instead which swaps the Unity desktop environment it uses for XFCE instead, this fixes the major slowdowns Ubuntu can cause, theres also Linux Mint which is gnome2/3 based instead of Unity (and also has an XFCE version as well as KDE which has alot of eyecandy so can be a bit slower) but otherwise based on Ubuntu, has a much nicer out of the box setup for people migrating from windows. If you ever wish to learn the C programming language, most people recommend the GCC toolchain. GCC on windows, very dickish to setup. Easier to learn on linux. --- Post updated --- Less than 1% of steam users are on linux. Devs already said that basically that few people really isnt worth supporting. Regarding OSX while the subject is up. Less than 5% use that and most macs are very low end machines that its not worth supporting.
I disagree with this. I agree that yes, apple restricts the hell out of what you do, but Microsoft operating systems are not that restrictive at all. Second of all, they are not forcing you to upgrade to Windows 10, because I'm still running Windows 7 on my laptop, and have just been putting off the upgrade.
Microsoft have been pushing out forced windows 10 updates recently, not a concern to me as my main rig is already windows 10. You'd be surprised at what windows does actually restrict...
There is no point doubling the amount of bug testing / fixing in alpha but I would like to see Linux / Vulkan / OpenGL support in the finished product. As for the argument "not many people use linux" I'm one of the many people that is only running windows because few games have linux support, it's a case of "support it and they will come".
Well I haven't been forced on my laptop yet, so I'm not gonna worry about that, and yeah, windows is gonna be more restricted than Linux because its not open source, like Linux, so there's always going to be restrictions. Just not as bad as apple.
I moved to Linux over a year ago. I miss BeamNG. Sometimes I cry seeing the devblog. sad life :C I did however install Windows 10 on a hard drive the other day (I had to yank my free 10 copy, joo) I also tried BeamNG, holy damn was it better. 10/10.
http://www.linuxjournal.com/content/linux-gaming-exploding-steam. There is no doubt that linux is growing as a gaming platform
I have experimented with getting the current version of BeamNG to run on Linux using Wine. Sadly, the DX11 implementation just isn't finished enough for the game to run yet. If we're lucky, we may get it working by August, but if we aren't, it might be mid 2017. I've gotten the game to get to the splashscreen, not further, for anyone interested.
As you can see by clicking on OS Version in Steam's HW/SW survey, 95.4% of Steam users use Windows. Only 3.6% use OS X, and less than 1% use Linux. I think this explains well enough that Linux really isn't a gaming platform as of last month. I'm not saying that I wouldn't love it if Linux was the primary gaming platform, I'm just saying that it isn't. Far from it.
should also be noted that steams own hardware figures showed linux dropping the last few months, not rising.
Some mass produced games must be ported first to Linux, so a changing of the system is it worth. BeamNG is not such a game with deep impact to the market, but it could be the first step. And maybe it runs on Linux a lot smoother that on Windows so the (in the Gaming branch) little percentage of the players have a good reason to change their system. Personally I use Linux and Windows. Linux to work with and Windows to play with. In few words: it would be really cool but is also really unlikely. Keyword: "control"
Just wanted to stand up and be counted with Linux. I said bye to Microsoft and am never going back and no dual booting. Microsoft took a direction that doesn't align with my views so only Linux Devs will get my money from now on. I do love BeamNG and do not regret giving them my money but I will miss this game. The BeamNG guys also have done a lot for Torque 3D, they were a major force for the porting to OpenGL. Anyway I never understood how much Windows got in the way of my productivity until I went to Linux.
The devs already said years ago they plan to support BeamNG on Linux, but then they went silent. Supposedly OpenGL support took longer than expected. We are still looking into it, but moving into a different API requires resources and time, a lot of it. At this point, Vulkan would be the thing we will go for, but do not expect it anytime soon. We are prioritizing the game itself at the moment, rather than another API change (we already moved from DirectX9 to DirectX11 for various reasons)
