I use a Logitech G27 and when I got the game on Steam, when using an automatic transmissions, first gear on the H gate put the car into D (drive), second gear put the car in 2 (second gear lock), and third gear put the car in 1 (first gear lock). After a recent update, I couldn't shift any car into first gear lock so this got me thinking. A better way to map the automatic transmission controls onto an H gate is to have first gear be P (park), second gear be R (reverse), third gear be N (neutral), forth gear be D (drive), fifth gear be 2 (second gear lock) and sixth gear be 1 (first gear lock). What do you guys think?

Yes. Or third gear is R, 'neutral' is N and fourth gear is D. From that point of view, it would be more like the 'real thing' as you move the gear lever only for- and backwards (not sure about P, one could use a button for instance)

    Scheme:

    R
    |
    N
    |
    D

    I +1 this idea as I have a Logitech G27 also.
I agree it should be "Neutral" as Neutral, Third as Reverse, Fourth as Drive.
And then possibly Fifth as a Second Gear, and Sixth as a First Gear.
Park could be first or second, but there's already a button for it (first red button on the Logitech Shifter on default mapping.)
