Decided I would install XP as a nice coding environment.

I haven't even gotten to a setup screen yet.

This is going well so far.

make sure your hard drive mode is set to IDE, not SATA. that fixed a blue screen for me a couple times before i got to setup

Why XP? It's old and unsupported. Go with Win7. Or Linux.

Sanded down the sides of the heatsink on the 6790 and it's better at least. Still runs up to 102c and throttles after a minute or so in Furmark. The middle heatpipe that goes over the die is hot, but I can keep my finger on it while the side heatpipes are burning hot to the touch. That means that most of the die isn't making good contact. Damn it to hell.

If there are air bubbles, more thermal paste should do. Just enough to fill the gap though. You could also sand down the heatpipes to make them flat if they aren't. Have you even replaced the broken fan?

Looking at leaked benchmarks of the 980 Ti put it almost exactly at the Titan X's performance. Nice.

Ordered some new parts for my PC and they arrived today!
Unfortunately I built it up and plugged it in only to see my PSU (GS800 I've had for 2 years) go up in smoke.
    Any clues/advice?
I got a new CPU, motherboard and RAM (5820k, MSI x99 SLI Plus and some Kingston value DDR4)

The fan spins fine, it's just really loud. I doubt there's bubbles and I lapped it with 220 grit sandpaper to flatten it. I think it could use something like 600 grit+ lapping but all I have is 220. At least it doesn't throttle anymore at this point.

Well, I'm not an expert in PSU's. If you are going to buy a new one though, you can take a look at the Cooler Master G650M. I got mine a couple of weeks ago and it's a good PSU. Runs quiet and cool and is relatively cheap.

This is a test (in Dutch) between 600-650W PSU's. Last page: http://nl.hardware.info/reviews/6061/9/600-650-watt-voedingen-25-modellen-getest-conclusie
I can imagine Dutch is gibberish but scroll down to the results :) (see 'gold, silver, bronze award'). The G650M got the bronze award.
Hardwareinfo.nl is a very trustworthy source.

I'd recommend anything Cooler Master or XFX.

You dont want to use too much thermal paste or it actually restricts cooling.

But idling in 30s. Not too worrying. Under load is what you want to concern yourself with.

(This is about PCs) So, a couple of days ago, my mom came up to me. Tomorrow is my sister's appointment to get her stomach scoped with a swallowable camera. The appointment is at 7AM, and it's an hour drive to Atlanta to get there, and getting dressed, etc, so my dad and sister need to leave at about 5:45 in the morning. So, my mom said, since you need to stay at my house until they get done (which may take quite a few hours), she told me that her neighbors' (2 lesbian girls, one smoking how, one butch) hard drive needs replaced. I'm like, "OK, do you know what kind of computer it is, and the brand, and what OS it runs?" I was going to ask if laptop or desktop, brand, how old to give me a idea if either 2.5 vs 3.5 inch, and IDE vs SATA. She didn't know, and just told me to see if I can replace their hard drive. Since I was forced into it, now I have to bring screwdrivers, laptop, ESD strap, etc, along with some shit to do because my mom just moved into that building, (https://www.google.com/maps/@34.309...!1e1!3m2!1siUacNmRtZbYMXBSrWoIWmA!2e0!6m1!1e1 is where she lives), and so now I'm forced into a hard drive replacement. And I don't even have a hard drive, fun.

    Seriously?

Just go over there, find out what kind of drive it takes, and order them a new one.
