A CX isnt totally cheaping out. That is a reputable branded unit. I think what the lecturer is referring to are the no brand 500W'ers you can get for as little as £10-15 (for comparison my uber budget brand 550W was £30, it is at least known to be reliable though I would like an upgrade) - - - Updated - - - WinToBootic did not come to the rescue. While they claim it can rip from DVD, it actually has no way of selecting DVD as the source. Does not work as advertised.
I'm running a supernova 750w. I can't say I've ever had a problem with PSU's, but I do have a friend that had an old one catch fire.
the 500W'er that came free with my case would have been deadly. 18v on the 12v line. about 9 on the 5v and 6 on the 3v. - - - Updated - - - Something occured to me. HDD's have a tiny hole that says not to cover, whats it for? - - - Updated - - - Ok, its for regulating air pressure
The CX 430, 500 and 600 aren't actually manufactured by Corsair. Still, very far from a crappy no-name brand.
Read they're made by some chinese company hired by Corsair to make their low-end PSUs for cheap. Still, being designed by Corsair, they're far from bad. I've never heard of any problems with them, just not the same quality as their higher end models.
Pretty much no one makes their own PSU's, there are a couple that do it themselves. When people say buy only from a good brand its because you are paying for the warrenty and the fact the brand has a reputation to uphold, while some company that is super cheap that no one has heard of has no such concerns.
Going to do a copy/paste here The CX430 is made by Channel Well Technology. They seem to be an ok OEM. Back in 2010 they were the ones that made the 750, 800, and 1000w PSUs by corsair.
Take a look at this, its pretty fantastic: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/power-supply-psu-brands,3762-2.html Part of me died when i looked at one of the bad psu examples. At least its case is grounded i guess... My power supply is a Cooler master but it is actually made by Enhance. But if a power supply is 80+ bronze then it will probably be completely fine, if it is anything higher then its almost certainly fine. If it doesn't have an 80+ certification i wouldn't even bother looking at it.
I got the computer as a gift a year ago, the place they bought it from is well known, and isn't cheap, I'm sure they don't put in pitty PSU's, but when my teacher opened up the case to put in the GPU, it did look... cheap... unbranded... small... but I only looked at it for 5 seconds as I had my eyes gluded to my new GPU, no flickering or anything like that yet, I might upgrade the PSU, but I'm not right now, as soon as I see some power issues I'll buy a new PSU straight away.
I might buy some Corsair Vengeance RAM after my case and SSD. Wouldn't expect that to be anytime soon though. But I want dem heatsinks.
Just got some more RAM from a friend for my Miracle Machine. Now it has RAM from 3 different pre-built PCs (including itself).
What about getting broken ram with those heatsinks and remounting them on your RAM? Costs you less than buying a new stick.
They're not that expensive, the site that I buy from has an 8Gig kit for 79.99 I paid around $5 more for Mushkin Stiletto's, and about the same for Mushkin Redline. The FrostByte heatsink looked way cooler that the Stiletto.
