For me it's similar. I really like that game, it made me buy and build my own sim rig. I also invested in better hardware to make VR possible for me. And because VR is just way better for any driving game, i didn't even put a monitor on my sim rig, after it moved away from my computer, because it got to big. That leaves me in a situation, where i can play driving games only in VR. Which worked great up until now. The last version of beam was still playable, but only in normal game modes. Career put on too much strain on my system.

But in this version, like @cillytek said, the performance is so bad that it is practically unplayable, which is unfortunate. Speaking only for me, i cannot find a combination of graphic settings that look decent enough to bother playing, and still run with somewhat acceptable levels of fps. For me the problem is that the game just looks too bad with every graphics setting turned down as much which is required to run decent fps, lets say consistenly above 40.

My system is similar like in other posts, i7 14700k, rtx4080 super and 64gb ram. So this should be plenty to run VR games on my quest 3.

I just hope that vulcan will also get some improvements, to get the game at least playable again.

Hi, we noticed a problem. At night, the lights only work when the window view is between eye (slowest). The light reflections are very bright and disturbing. The EV slider solves it at 1.7. Since update 0.39, it is almost impossible to maintain 72fps even on low settings. On monitor 800-1000 fps VR 72 dropping.. please do something about the Vulkan renderer.

    Sry for bad english.

I'm having similar FPS issues especially in VR

The between eye screen rendering being required now for lighting definitely doesn't help as that's probably 3 fps lost just there

I can still play at maybe 45ish fps at medium/high settings, the thing is for me at least lowering the settings does almost nothing fps wise, at most gaining me like 2 fps (hard to tell due to how vulkan works with adjusting settings)

Specs are also definitely not the issue for me as well

Alright guys, i found a way back to playing old versions of the game. You can install any older version via steam using steam console. Anyone interested: Reddit thread

Also useful is steamDB if you need other versions of the game. The manifest ID can be found all the way on the bottom of that site, on bottom of the list "Changed files in this update", look for the green text.

@stenyak can we expect a better (playable) version in the coming years?

You've linked to a thread from r/macgaming. We do not support nor test anything on mac, so I can't comment on how things will work on that platform, neither now nor in the future.

For windows however, VR will be receiving some improvements in v0.40 already.

Oh i actually didn't realize it was from mac gaming, its pretty much just a pretty good manual for downloading any version of beamng from steamdb. I used this to get version 0.38.6 back, to still being able to play beamng on windows of course.

Thanks a lot for this information, that's what is everyone here hoping for i guess. And thanks for the quick answer!

@stenyak just had a think. Does Beam's current rendering pipeline allow for a relatively easy implementation of FOVeated rendering? Could be a cool way of really squeezing a lot of performance out for us VR nerds. Especially since Beam is coming to PS5, and PSVR has eye tracking after all!

Another VR only player here. As others have said almost unplayable even on lowest settings. Ryzen 5800X3D and RX 9070 XT with a Quest 3. I feel Single Pass Stereo support would help a lot.

I've resorted to other driving sims but would much prefer using BeamNG.

Out of curiosity is PSVR on the roadmap?

Otherwise fantastic product, I'm a big fan of the approach and appreciate the dev effort and hard work - thank you!

    Thanks for the kind words!

At the moment PSVR is not even on our horizon. There's simply not enough hours in a day, nor days in a week, to add that to our mountain of pending tasks/wishes. Would have been great to feature it, but it's just not been possible so far. It's not in any plan right now, once we climb the immediate mountains, we'll be able to more clearly see what lies further ahead :)

For PC though, as mentioned above, we managed to squeeze some optimizations for v0.40. No promises on what the impact will be, as different people are bottlenecked by different issues, but *some* of you should notice improvement for sure.

Is foveated rendering in the pipeline/to-do list? beam massively struggles at higher resolutions, and damn if vr don't have some insane resolutions nowadays (for example, around 43 million pixels on the pimax dream air. equivalent to about 6 2160p displays, and you preferably want to push a stable 90 fps aswell)

On another note, is DX12 gonna support vr in the upcoming update? Or will continue staying vulkan only

I got this foveated VRS with eye tracking working so far. With Scissor cropping top to to bottom to shave some perf. This is very WIP

Alright here it is if you want to try :
    https://github.com/Letrange-g/BeamNG-VRS
VRS doesn't give has much performance boost as scisssor cropping tho. But all the options are exposed to toy with.
