Had to bump as this beauty reached 200,000km at the start of last month! Not as impressive as miles, but not bad for being on a relatively small island you can drive nearly the whole length of in half a day.
Well i got y'all beat with my Plymouth. Its the most beat up, used, structurally unsound, bent-like-a-banana Valiant that's still used as every day transport. Its had no interior for at least a month now, I've put 60 000 miles on it since i got it on the road in late '22, so its probably closer to 600 000 miles now, it's had three engines, two transmissions and Im sure a few diffs as well. The front windscreen is starting to leak at the top, the c pillars have separated from the body now, and the fuel pump is failing. No one but me here has any right to complain about their beater car, because most of you have other cars at your disposal or live in cities. I do get 20 mpg though
It was half way separated when i first bought it in Feb '22, been steadily getting worse since then. It had lots of hidden rust when i first got it
Salt isn't so much a huge issue, although you are correct because I'm living within a km from the coast. The real reason Australian Valiants (and any/all aussie manufactured cars) are terrible rusters is because unlike in the states these had zero anti rust coatings applied to the body prior to painting. Australian factories used sub standard lead fillings and every thing associated with the welds/welding. You'll notice on the '67 up US built A bodys, the C pillar was smoothly integrated into the body where as Australian built ones kept a trim piece along that seam. Its to hide the crack prone sub par lead filling that passed the non existent qc department, water would get trapped not by the trim but rather in the join itself. Longer story shorter: Aussies can't build cars for the life us, the best thing that ever happened to aussie manufacturing was its demise Its why the floor pan in my car is relatively rust free compared to the rest of the body, because for '67 and '68, the floor pans were imported from the states. The more Australian the Valiant became, the worse they got... I know this through me mate John, who traveled extensively for Chrysler International as warranty officer (or what ever the title was), his job was to go factories around the world and suggest fixes and solutions to make the cars less crap. Aussie's were completely hopeless
