Hello everyone, I'm working on recreating from scratch a portion of this beautiful GC-200 road, based in Gran Canaria (ES). Map size is 2048x2048 scaled 1:1 to the real one, built with an high fidelity LiDAR scan of the area. The main road and crossroad are ready, as well as most of the road signs; I'm also making sure all the correct roads/signs sizes are being respected. Unfortunately I think this map will be paid or with a paid early access (when in a more playable state) because my laptop is struggling and I don't have much money for a decent new one (if you want to support my work: https://paypal.me/LucaB2004?country.x=IT&locale.x=it_IT ) Here some pics and a video:
Great! A Spanish map that isn't just a rally course. By the way, will it have neighbourhoods and towns?
This looks great. Its always great to see a good replica of a real place being done. About the low res LIDAR heightmap... its probably too late now but there are some ways to optimize these before importing to have less terraforming necessary (although I don´t think its too bad in this case..). Sometimes its enough to just apply a blur filter in photoshop to get rid of most pointy edges. Also there are 3D terraforming softwares like worldmachine that let you apply all sorts of filters. These will, for the most part, fix such a low resolution heightmap, although it will look a bit different than reality in the end.
Basically what's present in real life will be recreated, so no villages, only houses scattered here and there, according to the sat image. Amazing pro pic Thank you! Didn't know about these methods. As you said it's not that bad luckily; I'm smoothing it the old way with the world editor lol
I went to check and I discovered I was completely wrong! For some reasons I remembered 500 was the maximum. I now changed it from 500 to 900 and it's much more realistic. Thanks!! (the big problem however is that I have to re-adjust all the road to the new height ) Bonus: completed all the direction signs (they have LODs as well) + luis restaurant
I just had a discussion on discord about the heightscale. Someone had a height of 5000. It works but you have no chance to get the roads smooth with too high values. So check the smoothness of your roads after increasing the height. Good luck for your project!
yes! a quick update: adjusted all the main road to the new height; started to refine the terrain around it
march update I didn't like how the terrain was looking after refining it, it was too smooth and soft. Also scaling and proportions weren't exactly right. So I restarted the map from scratch with a better resolution LiDAR and now it's as accurate as the real one! new 3d prickly pear plant asset new backdrop (WIP)

Sick! I went to Fuertaventura and Tenerife a while back, so its nice to see the island I didn't explore. Good luck!
