Hello BeamNG players and possible dev team, I'm posting here for the first time because I truly have run out of solutions.
This started when I updated my game to 0.33, I started it up innocently, expecting it to be just like any other update. But no, when I loaded into a map the game suddenly crashed. And after a bit of regular bug fixing (ancient mod removing, cashe clearing) It wasn't getting any better. So i verified the game's integrity and discovered that indeed one, yes literally one, file is missing. It's called: 'none.json' by the integrity checker.
BeamNG's support program couldn't help me, because even when I removed and disabled all mods AND reinstalled the game (including removing the user file) The problem remains, I'm still missing the same file.
the name of this file has not once been mentioned by anyone here, so I wonder what kind of support I can get from it.
Just so that anyone who would like to help is on the same page as me: I own a steam copy of BeamNG, updated to the newest version, including patch, No mods are on/in the files and I've already tried a clean reinstall. I don't know if any of you would own this mysterious 'none.json' but according to my laptop it should be at: c:/program files (x86)/steam/steamapps/common/beamng.drive/none.json

Update: I have also tried clearing steams download cashe, didn't work. Adding the most recent games verifying stability check note

If anyone would like to help I'd be very grateful because at the moment I can't play one of my favorite games :(

Just checked my installation, and I actually don't have a "none.json" file. Since you have reinstalled the game and also deleted your userfolder, I feel like the issue could be Steam. Try this:
    -Uninstall BeamNG
-Delete any remaining BeamNG folders and files
-Open Steam and head to Settings
-Go to Downloads, and clear download cache
    -Then reinstall the game

If that doesn't work, reinstalling Steam could be an alternate option, but if you have lots of Steam games installed, then it might not be worth it.

Thanks for the attempt at helping, I've now tried clearing the download cashe. Ofc it didn't work, it keeps insisting on missing 'none.json' and crashes every time I load into a map. And I have 21 steam games on my laptop, so reinstalling steam is gonna set me way back and might just not be worth it.

I guess it's a sad ending but unless someone else has the key solution this will conclude my era of playing the worlds most fun driving simulator. I have the feeling that the devs don't have the biggest interest in helping 1 person of the millions players with a problem thats so unique they'll have to observe the guts of my laptop and steam connection.
So, I guess at least for now, farewell Beam, stay awesome.

My copy doesn't contain none.json so I believe it isn't really needed for the game to run. This might sound crazy but you could try to make a text document name it none.json and then place it in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\BeamNG.drive if that doesn't work you can try and reinstall directx11 and Uninstall the Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015 X86 and X64 packages, restart your computer and install the package again don’t use the Repair function. Here is a blank none.json file for you too.

I was just wondering and checked my installation. I didn't find any none.json too, but there is a none.lua file that actually has content in: [game installation path]\lua\ge\extensions\gameplay\traffic\roles. So it seems to have something to do with traffic...

Well installing that gave actual progress because something changed: The none.json file is no longer missing ... But it now says that it's different. So it need content in it. Whatever it is supposed to contain is a mystery, but I'm gonna do my best Matpat impression and spout my main theories:

-None.json could be file to describe how to handle with lacking textures or shaders and how to safely keep the game running with faulty items of this calibur. This would also why the game crashes upon me loading into a map, many texture and shaders haven't activated then so the game tries to reach for a backup thats not there so it just crashes.

-None.json could be a file to combat piracy somehow (I really don't have much reasoning for this but stay with me for a moment), because when I load up the game and the lack of a file causes it to stop (the error code you get from this means that you're missing a file), verifying the games integrity is a relative quick way to find whats missing. And when it's indirectly quoted as: 'You are missing none of the files.' It makes me think that it's a deterent of some sort. Just my thoughts

    Anyways thanks for the help.

Are you able to try the game on a different system? Also, what happens if you launch the game straight from BeamNG.x64.exe?

The integrity list does have a "/None.json" entry, strangely enough.
    upload_2024-9-24_19-24-33.png
It's not present in my game as for all others, but BeamNG's integrity check does report it as missing.

    upload_2024-9-24_19-29-12.png

That doesn't change anything in my game though, so the game crashing issue has to be caused by something else.
If you crash the game on purpose and check the beamng.log file in your userfolder, does that include any errors down at the very bottom?

If you join the BeamNG discord server you might be able to get more help. If you scroll all the way down it's with the other social medias.

Alright I just tried it, started my bonestock game to a freeroam version of gridmap v1, but I'm not a programmer... far from it, so I don't quite understand what the log is saying and where to tackle the problem. I shall attach the specific log to the reply hoping that someone like you maybe would understand it.
Thanks for the suggestion and we might be moving forwards with this one, because it indeed doesn't mention 'none.json'.

Oh well this is interesting, directly from the beamNG.x64.exe does start without any problems. I don't know what this means in this search because I don't know the difference between the two types.

The fact that it starts properly when starting the game from the exe makes me think it's probably an issue related to the launcher. I'm not sure how to fix it though.

Just to clarify, you deleted the BeamNG.drive folder from appdata, correct?

When doing the full reinstall I uninstalled the game and deleted the BeamNG userfolder from my appdata, cleared the steam download cashe and basically made sure that besides my backed up data there was no beamng stuff on my laptop, the backed up data was stored far away from the designated BeamNG game files location. So yes I did delete the BeamNG.drive folder from appdata.

Just looked at the log files you posted, and if I'm reading them properly, it says your GPU driver is version 451.67, which is from 2020. Could you check if that's correct? If it is, try updating your GPU driver to the latest version.

Also, are you starting the game in Vulkan? That would explain why the game runs fine when you start it directly from the exe, because that would mean it is using DirectX.

You have the same CPU and GPU as me, and my game runs fine, which leads me to believe that the problem might be happening due to outdated drivers.

This could very easily sound a bit stupid or nitwit from my side but: How does one 'update their drivers'... I genuinely have no idea where to start with that. Also yes, I was using the vulkan renderer because it happens to be noticeably less straining on my laptop system, probably should have said that before. (my laptop was quite top of the range... in 2019 or something, I don't remember when I bought it).

Not a stupid question at all! :)
The easiest way to download the newest drivers is to go to NVIDIA's website and enter the model of your GPU at https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/
    - Go to the manual driver search
    - Select GeForce for the Product Category
    - Select GeForce GTX 16 Series (Notebooks) for Product Series
    - For Product, select GeForce GTX 1650
    - Select Windows 11 for Operating System
    - And lastly, enter your preferred language

Click "Find" and you should be brought to a new page. Click "Game Ready Drivers" at the top, then click "View".

Click download, and wait for it to install. Once it has installed, open the installer file and follow the instructions. Make sure to select the option to only download the graphics driver, and not GeForce Experience. Also make sure to use the Express option as well.

Once you have done all that, your drivers should be up to date! If you have any questions, feel free to ask!
